Thorpe 71 61 10 A statement in several local newspapers to the effect that the St. Leger was first run in 1870 and won by Hawtbornden having been the subject of inquiry by aeveral correspondents they are informed that the statement was highly incorrect. The Bt. Leger was first run in 1776 and was won by Allabaculia. It is thus the oldest fixture of the English turf. The Oaks was next established, being first run in 1779 and won by Bridget. The first Derby was run iu 1780 and was won by Diomed, this horse being afterward brought to this country, where he founded an illustrious line of great race horses. The Two Thousand is comparatively modern, having been first run in 1809 with Wizard enrolled as the winner. The One Thousand was established in 1814 and Charlotte was the first winner.
