Howland, president of the Washington Jockey Club, was a visitor at Gravesend Tuesday. Mr. Howland is enthusiastic over the prospects for the fall meeting at Washington and is eagerly waiting for the day when New Yorkers will file into the course and take a peep at the improvements the Washington Jockey Club has made at the course. A modern iron grand stand haB been constructed, which will hold more people than that at Brighton. The old betting ring has been demolished, and the layers will occupy places beneath the stand. Where the old betting inclosure Btood a spacious paddock has been constructed. On next Saturday, at the Gravesend track, there will be a special race for two-year-oldB, intended to bring together, if possible, such stars as J. W. Schorrs crack filly Endurance by Bight; Clarence H. Mackays good colt Heno; L. M. Myerss Leonora Loring, and W. C. Whitneys Nasturtium, King Hanover, Goldsmith or Yankee. In fact the race is open to anybody. The Brooklyn Jockey Club, in response to a generalemandjoruchanevent. has made arrangements to hold it under these conditions : Third Special for two-year-olds ; by subscription of 50 each; 5 forfeit, with ,500 added; weights seven pounds below the scale; good day and good track; about six furlongs. Mr. Schorr immediately agreed to enter Endurance by Right, whose great record is already known to turf followers. Trainer Charley Hill, in behalf of Mr. Mackay, aho stated that Heno would Burely go to the post. Mr. Myers was undecided about Leonora Loring, and no authentic information could be gleaned regarding the Whitney stable. It was thought, however, Mr. Whitney would start one of his noted coltB, Blue Girls presence being out of the question in view of her disability. The Brooklyn Jockey Club waB generally commended for its action and the hope was expressed in New York that the best possible field would be sent to the poet. Captain RiceB fast old cripple, General Ma-gruder, broke his neck at Delmar Tuesday morning. He was being galloped. A boy was working Magruder for a race on Saturday. The old horse was slipping along pretty well. Another boy had a horse cantering in front and on the rail. The boy on Magruder yelled to the other to pull out and let him through on the rail. The other attempted to do this, but either did not act faBt enough or hiB horse bore in. Anyhow Magruder hit him, went over the rail and broke his neck, On the Atlantic Transport Line steamship Manitou Tuesday there arrived in New York from England eleven thoroughbred horses, thai property of H. Eugene Leigh, the trainer and turfman, who has been a conspicuous figure in the seasons racing in England. With the horses is the frequent winner of important races, Royal FluBh, by Favo Flush, which has been one of the most successful of the Leigh horses. - The animals were consigned to the Fasig-Tipton company by Leigh, who has had charge of the Gardner stable in England, and came to the United States under the care of Teddy Lewis, who had charge of the Vanderbilt horses that were shipped to France a short time ago. All the shipment will be offered at auction at the Fasig-Tipton paddocks at SheepBhead Bay on October 1, when the sale of Marcus Dalya English stud will be held.
