BSCOBD TISf K AT HATLBSL Ideal racing conditions drew out a midsummer gathering, to Harlem yesterday, the immense grand stand and esplanade in front being filled to repletion. A better days sport conld not have been given anywhere. The track was lightning fast, Bessie Bpahrs five furlongs in 59, being equal to the track record at that distance, while Money Mnss came back soon afterward and ran the same distance in 59. Dick Dwyers work with the flag was expeditions and clever, the starts in all caBes being commendably equable. The big event of the day was the Chicago Stakes, a dash of one mile for three-year-olds and upward with ,500 added and a net value to the wine er of ,805. Of the ten horses scheduled to start Gsorge Arnold and Jiminez dodged the issue. Sam Hild roths entry, St. Marcos and Boiling Boer was made an odds-on favorite but had the public depended on the latter to perfotm for its wagers it would have gathertd nothing as he was hopelessly beaten off from start to finish. In contradistinction to hit inferidrrace St. Marcos, his stable companion, put up an exceptionally clever race, running the mile in 1:38, or one-twentieth of a Becond slower than the track mark. Sevoy, closely followed by Henry Burt, showed the way for the ftrBt six furlongs, where the latter assumed command turning into the final quarter a length in the lead. Here Knight called on St. Mai cos and he responded with a rush reaching Henry Burt near the last eighth post and passing him with the greatest of ease. He won by two and a half lengths from Beseda which finished like a ebot out of a gun beating the spent Henry Buit three l6ngthe for second place. Bceedas race was a corker, but she had no chance to beat the -w inner. Sevoy and Headwater ran well for six furlongs and then withdrew. Denman Thompson, by his clever victory ovor Fink Coat in the fifth race, a dash of one and one-sixteenth miles, bad the distinction of not only beating a high class horse but of establishing a new track record of 1:45, the old mark being 1:45. McQyle led byaood margin up to the last quarter where the hot pace he had set began to tell on him and he soon showed signs of distress. When well straightened for homo Pink Coat came fast and s4rongly and appeared to;have his field beaten when entar-ing the last eighth, bnt elocg in here Steele brought up Denmtn Thompson next to the in-side i ail with a rush and in a "tabasco" finish won by three-quarter of a length going away. Pink Coat was sent the same distance in front of the spent McQyle. Money Mueb appears to have a mortgage on b print reces hereabouts at present, judging from the easy mannor in which he disposed of the fleet Kiss Bennett in the third race, a dash of five furlongs. The latter led him for the first quarter, after which ho darted easily to the front andlwae never afterward in tronblo, winning easily by two lengths, while Miss Bennett beat Bummer a half for second place. Tho laBt namedtfinisbedlreEolutely and would have taken second ;place in a few more strides. BesBie Bpahrs five furlongB in 59 seconds was a splendid effort and stamps her a filly of good class. She made her field look cheap in the laetifeighth. Nellie Waddoll held a safe lead for aihalf mile when Beesie Spahr moved up fast and passed her with tho greatest of ease winninglby threellengths while Nellie Waddell beat J. V. Eirby two for second place. Thelfirstrace, a dash of six furlongs, went to School for Scandal, but she had to be driven o ut to the last ounce to Btall off Emma B.s bid at the end, which beatToah a length for second place. The long distance affair was the closest contested race that has been seen hereabout in some time, Hermencia, John BtcGurk and Ade-lante crossing the line noses apart in the order named. Light Ball ran away with the purse in the laBt race, a dash of one mile and fifty yards. He led from start to finish, winning by two lengths from Baird. Light Ball chipped off two-fifths of a second from the track, record of 1:43 for one mile and fifty yards. A sale of thoroughbreds took place in the Harlem paddock Saturday. Tho following prices were realized : Master Mariner; E. Nolte ,200 Lord Chesterfield; A. M. Linnell and Co.... 500 Bomper, b. f, 2, by Dundee Bunning Maggie ; J. Quigley ... 75 Arrival, b. f, 2, by Dundee-JDixio; J. Quigley 50 It is reported S. C. Hildreth paid ,000 for St. Marcos and an extra ,000 in case the colt won the Chicago Stakes. Harry White will take charge of shipping horses from Hawthorne and Harlem for Worth.
