GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Chambers and Walker, the well-known bookmakers, are in the city en route to Atlanta, Qa., where they have sj cured the betting privileges for the Southern Inter-State Fair. The racing begins on October 16 and will continue at Atlanta, Savannah and probably other southern cities for thirty or mora days. Mr. Chambers stated that the prospects were very good to give several successful meetings in the southern cities, as the people of those cities seem anxious to give the runners a fair trial. Chambers and Walker will remain over to see the beginning of the fall meeting at Worth. The stake events scheduled for decision at the fall meeting at the Fair Grounds, which began Monday, are the Autumn Stakes, three-year-olds and upward, run yesterday; St. Louis Fair Stakes, three-year-olds and upward, to be run Thursday of Fair week; the Gasconade Stakes, throe-year-oldB and upward, to be run Saturday, October 19; the Ozark, for two-year-olds, to be run October 12, and the Final, to be run Saturday, October 26. Each stake haB an added money value of ,000, and all the good hones which have, been racing at St. Louis this season will be eligible. The Westchester Bacing .Association, at its fall meeting at Morris Park, will hold a number of star events named for the most noted horses in the stables of W. C. Whitney and J. B. Haggin. On Friday, October 11, for instance, the Nasturtium Handicap, for two year-olos, at six and a half furlongs, will be run. Then on Monday, October 14, the Blue Girl Stakes, for two-year-olds, maidens at the time of starting, five and a half furlongs, and the Yankee Handicap, for two-year-olds, at six and a half furlong?, will be the features. On Monday, October 21, the Goldsmith Selling Slakes, for two-year-olds, over the Eclipse Course, will be decided, while on the same day the Water Color, for two-year-olds and upward, at two miles, will be a further attraction. The Jockey Club has officially sanctioned the "no recall" system of starting. This systemis essentially a part of the starting gate. With a recall flag the gate becomeB a mere lining-up machine, whereas when the gate was first introduced in Australia the idea of a starter having a flag to recall his field in caBe he was dissatisfied with the Btart was not even entertained. There is no question about its being the fairest system, and the one which leaves the least possible cheuce for dishonesty. As soon as the boys once understandthat the release of the barrier is a final and absolute start, and that failure to break instantly is followed by immediate and severe punishment, they will learn to get away in a hurry, Exchange.
