LAKESIDES OPENING. The fall meeting at Lakeside opened auspiciously yesterday with a big attendance and excellent racing. The track was lightning fast and good time prevailed throughout the afternoons sport. Burnie Bunton lowered the track mark three-fifths of a second for five and a half furlongs when she beat Money Mues in 1:06. The principal feature of the day was the fourth race, a handicap at one and one-sixteenth miles, for three-year-olds and upward, with 00 added. Of the fourteen carded to start, but six responded to tbe bugle call. The Cook entry was made a prime favorite, being held at 6 to 5 in the betting. It rewarded the confidence placed in it by its many backers by running one two. Haviland immediately darted to the front at flag fall and held a commanding lead up to the last sixteenth, where he began to tire. Here his stable companion, Omdurman, came with a rush, beating him to the line by a half length, going away. Haviland beat Orontas a short neck for second money. The latter closed ground fast in the last quarter and would have been eecond in a stride or two. Gonfalon ran well for seven furlongs and then began to tire. The Conqueror II. ran much below his best form. He is a difficult horse to guess. Burnie Bunton was at her best, and under a clever pilotage by Coburn beat Money Muss handily. Tbe distance was five and a half furlongs. Money Muss showed the most speed for the first half mile, but just after rounding for home Burnie Bunton closed up fast on him, and after a short struggle in the last eighth drew away, winning handily by a length. Money Mues beat Lou Woods six lengths for eecond place. The last named ran a surprisingly good race and was easily the best of the others. Maggie Davis ran a distant fifth and1 showed plainly she does not like weight. Boney Boy might just as well have remained in his stall. Emma B., neglected by tho talent ard public won the first race, a dash of Bix furlongs in easy fashion at odds of 12 to 1. She finished strongly through the last eighth, winning by two lengths from Lady Contrary, which beat Henry of Traetamare a neck for second place. The last named ran in much improved form and is about ready to win when placed right. Kohn-wreath unaccountably auit when the pinch came. Bival Dare ran far below the good form shown in her last race. Nellie Waddell showed plainly that her last , two starts had put her on edge as she had little or no trouble in beating Merrimont two and a half lengths in the second race, a dash of five furlongs for two-year-olds. Merriment finished fast down the last eighth and nipped Bag Tag a head on the post for second money. Julia Jun-kin finished a dismal last, quitting almost to a walk in the last eighth. She iB indeed inconsistent. Federal had only to gallop under restraint over the course to beat the field he was pitted against in the fifth race, a dash of seven furlongs. If You Dare led on Buff erance to the last eighth where Coburn called upon Federal and he came away without much effort, winning by two and one-half lengths, while Tom Kingsley came with a rush in the closing strides and beat out the tiring If You Dare a length for second place. Constellator was under presaure all the way and ran far below his best form. Barilla took the last race of the day in a hard drive by a nose from El Qhor which beat Linden Ella five lengths for second place. The ride on the last named was weak for with any kind of a strong, hustling pilotage she would have been a keen contender at the finish. Valdez could not extend himself to his best form through the dusty sand, Fantasy was well backed but ran indifferently. Dominick was fined 5 by Starter Dwyer for misbehavior while at the poBt in the second race.
