NOTES OF THE TURF. Doyles Commoner, tho most valuable two-year-old at Latonia, dropped dead in his stall about 1 a. m., Thursday. Tho colt was ill for several days, and, while his condition waB seri-oub, tho end came very unexpectedly. Jim Baker, his trainer, made herculean efforts to eavo the colt and watched at his side for several 1 nights. Doyles Commoner was by The Com- 1 moner Thistle, by Himyar, and was owned by P. J. Millett of Knoxville, Tenn., and was broken and trained by Jim Baker. Doyles 1 Commoner started six times and won five times. Ho was beaten in an all-age race by Spring-wellp, in a three-quarter race over the Fort Erie track, in 1:131. The colt had no work for a woek, and at that was beaten a short head by a poor ride. An offer of ,000 was refusod by Millett, as Baker considered him the best two-year-old he had ever seen or trained. T. B., St. Louis, Mo. Under the circumstances the bookmaker appears to be rigbt. Your bat was one with an "if" involved and it was not for him to decide when a contingency arose, which you had not provided for. L. V. Bell will ship next Wednesday a carload of horses for California, including May W., Paul Clifford, Black Dick, Sweet Tooth, Morcer, Lady Stalling and Disturber. F. K. J., Chicago. It was no doubt the mistake of the operator sending tho call. They frequently mistake tho colors and identity of the leading horse. J. B.. Chicago: He was at Latonia recently i and probably is now. He is not ruled off, but his license to ride was taken away by tho Jockey Club. E. H. B. As it was an impossible bet you i should get your money back and study the entries more closely next time. ! ; j ;
