SARATOGA. GOSSIP. Saratoga. N. Y., August 11 8tarter Fitzgerald is seriously ill and was unable to resume his duties this afternoon. His place was taken at almost a moments notice by C. H. Pettingill, whose work was nearly faultless in every one of the six events. Alsono ran today in the colors of J. E. Madden, his new owner. Ten thousand dollars was said to be the purchase price, and it is Maddens intention to reserve the colt for next years derbies and other valuable stakes. A searching and thorough investigation into Burns foul riding on Girdle -in the Saratoga Special, Won by Irish Lad, has been concluded. The stewards have given out that there will be nothing doing in the matter and the incident is closed. Harry Payne Whitney today sent a communication to the stewards announcing his willingness to return the stake;, trophy and forfeits and run the race over again. N. Benningtons announcement that he would sell out his entire string of race horses in training tomorrow at auction has creat6d much surprise. W. C. Whitneys offer of 0,000 for C. F. Dwyers Francesco was refused. There were a half dozen claimants for Bluff after his defeat today and W. C. Daly was the lucky prize winner. Three track records were broken before the rain commenced falling and the American record equaled by Ada Nay when she won the first race, five and a half furlongs, in 1 :C6.
