GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The long meeting at Butte, Montana, ended September 1, and concerning the gentlemen who guided the racing the Butte Miner says: During the entire sixty-one days of racing this season the management of the track, in so far as it relates to the judges, starter and other track officials, has been beyond criticism. This applies particularly to Presiding Judge Joseph A. Murphy. He has always had the entire confidence of the public, and there has never been an instance where his decisions were questioned, and he has ruled both jockeys and owners with an iron hand, wherever there was the least shade of suspicion. He enjoys the respect of all the horsemen and jockeys and established during the time that ho has acted as judge a reputation for clean, honest racing for the Butte track that has never been equaled in the turf annals of the state.; A number of stakes are offered by the Los Angeles Racing Association, entries to which will close September It and which will be decided in the course of the meeting, which will open October 11 and close October 25.
