HARLEMS NEW MILE MAEK. Rose Trees splendid effort in the fifth race at Harlem yesterday, a dash of one mile, resulted in establishing a new Harlem record for the distance, the previous mark being, singularly enough, made by the same mare September 1. On that date she negotiated tho distance in 1 :38t, but yesterday she clipped ofFa fifth of a second. The race was a sore disappointment to the talent, which regarded Jiminez as almost a moral and backed him heavily. That Jiminez was the best was almost the universal opinion, as Birkenruth carelessly tossed ihe race away after having it well within his grasp. Jiminez, as was expected, led by a big margin up to the last eighth, where he had an advantage of five lengths over the field, but in the last eighth Rose Tree moved up fast with a great burst of speed and got,up in time to nip Jiminez by a head on the post. In the closing strides Birkenruth displayed little onergy and rode a listless finish. Had the horse been ridden out with determination he must certainly have won. Scarlet Lily finishod third, four lengths back. She ran to her best form and had no mishaps. Duelist fell away beaten after running well up for six furlongs. The steeplechase resulted in a hollow victory for Wenlock, which ran away from the field after taking tho last jump, winning eased up by six lengths from David S., which beat Torreon three for second place. David S. showed much speed and fenced well. Torreon tired fast in the last eighth. Old Fox finished stroDgly and would have been third in another stride or two. Teller broke down after taking the third jump. Crest fell over the fourth jump and Iceni over the last. Of a big field that faced the barrier in tho days opener, a dash of five and a half furlongs for two. year-oldB, Joe Buckley, tho even money favorite, proved to be much the best. Ho led from start to finish, winning well within himself by one length from Galba, which finished four in front of Maxette for second place. Galba closed up ground fast in tho last quarter and finished resolutely. Maxetto tired slinhtly under tho keen prossuro of tho last sixteenth struggle with Galba. Pericles came strongly at the end and would have been third in a few more strides. Florestan showed early speed. Burnie Bunton was at her best in the B6cond race, a dash of six furlongs, taking the race rather handily at the end by a length from Nellie Waddell, which beat Rag Tag two and a half for second place. Nellie Waddell easily outrun Burnie Bunton for the first five furlongs, but in the last sixteenth struggle, tho latter gradually wore the former down and was going away at the end. Rag Tag ran tho best race of his career. He tired just a trifle in the last eighth. It was strictly a three-horse race throughout. Scintillant II. took the fourth race, a dash of one mile and sevonty yards, in a big exercise romp. Winkfield rode him the overland route for the first quarter and then had him pocketed all down the backstretch, but when Scintillant II. got clear sail ing down the final quarterhe moved up with comparative ease and won as his rider pleased by one length.Archie finished second five lengths before Searcher, which ran a dull race. Aleno Abbott showed speed for six and a half furlongs. Wink-field continued on with Scintillant II. after passing the jwiro and worked him out an extra half, running over a mile and a half all told. Tho workout was evidently a preparation for the cup race tomorrow. Thelsixth race, a dash of five and a half furlongs for two-year-olds, was won by Vestry by three-quarters of a length from Hattie Walker, which beat Serge three lengths for second place. Hattio Walker displayed her usual turn of speed, but tired palpably under keen punishment in the last fifty yards. Serge tired fast when the pinch came. Urchin proved the best of an unwieldy field of fifteen in the laBt race, a dash of one mile and fifty yards.SHo was badly outrun for tho first six furlongs, but moved up fast down tho last quarter and justfeot up in time to beat The Caxton a head on the post with Silurian a lapped-on third. The last named tired palpably under a vigorous ride in the last sixteenth. The Caxton finished stoutly. The further entry of Urchin will be refused at Harlem on account of his in and out running. Birkenruth was fined 00 by Judge Hamilton for carelessness in his finish on Jiminez.
