GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Of a new track to be constructed at St. Louis the Republic of Sunday says : A"P.tsJ.UCarmody, promoter of the new race track to be operated under the auspices of the Mound JityBacers and Breed-ersIAssociation, yesterday closed a lease for eight years on the ICO-acre tract known as Clark place, situated at the corner of.Natural Bridge road and Union avenue. "Mr. Carmody said last night that the price agreed upon for the lease was ,000 p9r year for a period of eight years and a clause therein provides for the purchase of the property if the lessors see fit before the expiration of two years. " This track will be ready for racing before May 1, 1902, said Mr. Carmody. It is the intention of the association to expend several hundred thousand dollars on the improvement of tne property. We intend to build a first-class race track, to be run as race tracks were twenty years ago, with a beautiful clubhouse and all other appurtenances that go to make up a model plant. " It is my intention to operate this track for thirty days each year, and to bring rating back to the old style of a short, pleasurable and profitable meeting. Some of the most prominent persons of St. Louis are with me in this enterprise. " It is also my intention to give a brief trotting meeting inthe fall of each year. " A report has been circulated to the effect that the Western Jockey Club will not permit any new tracks to open in St. Louis. I cannot seej why citizens of iSt. Louis should be dictated toina matter of this kind. Whether or not tha Western Jockey Club interferes, the Mound City Bacersjand Breeders Association will carry out its schedule. "The arrangements for the lease were conducted on the part of the Clark heirs through Attorney Semple of Philadelphia. The location is considered by Mr. Carmody as ideal for the reason that the property can be reached in forty minutes from almost any part of the city, and both the Suburban and Transit companies afford ample facilities. A belt line skirts the proposed plant."
