MEMPHIS GOSSIP. Lord Quex, in S. C. Hildreths string at Montgomery Park, pulled up lame after a "trial last Wednesday. He will not go to .the post till late in the season. The colt has bowed a tendon, and though Hildreth has made every effort to get him ready for the Montgomery Handicap, having backed the colt from 40 to 1 down, the injury will prevent the horse from starting Fast work was plentiful among morning trials Wednesday. Tichenor and Co.s pair, Flocarline and Waswift, worked another mile in a fraction less than 1:44. McChesney was. galloped" two miles and then breezed five eighths in 1:04. Aladdin worked a handy mile in 1:44. Au Re voir did the distance in l:45i. Several colts and fillies from the Schorr stable turned, halves in better than 52 seconds from the barrier. J. P. Mayberry, C. R. Ellisons son of Albert Amabel, negotiated a half in 52 seconds. Skilful, Ellisons American Derby candidate, did five furlongs in 1:05. Witfull was "given slow" work. Speaking -of her chance for the American Derby, Sam Hildreth said: "I think that some people are taking Wit-ful too seriously when it comes to midsummer racing with the best colts and fillies. She is a useful sort of a little animal, and I expect to win many purses and some stakes with her, but until she shows better disposition to pack weight and go a derby distance I could not hope to win such a race as the American Derby." Comparing Witfull and Modesty, and May Hempstead, the only winners respectively of the American and Tennessee Derbies, Hildreth said: "Modesty and May Hempstead were very large mares. Witfull is very small. They proved they could carry weight: Witfull has never packed more than 112 pounds and won. She may improve, and I hope she will, but I liave other hopes for the American Derby." It is a well known fact at Memphis that Hildreth will give most of his time, so far as the Derby is concerned, to preparing Top-soil was taken on the track last Wednesday and Hildreth saw him work a slow three-quarters for the first time this winter. The colt is in good condition for faster work, which his trainer will give from now on.
