Safeguard held his field safe all the way, raced Bummer II. to defeat in the first half and came away without much effort in the last furlong. Whangdoodle finished fast and out-gamed Bummer II. in the final drive: The latter showed speed, but found the trip too far. Henry of Trastamare held his field safe all the way, raced Queen Friese into submission and had plenty in reserve to stall off a challenge from Limelight. The latter took the short route and was well ridden, but tired in the last sixteenth. Joe Doughty was as good as left at the post, but closed a big gap and got third money because Socapa had to pull up. The latter stumbled over Radiant Heat and almost fell. Radiant Heat was a keen contender until the final furlong, where he appeared to cross his legs and fell. Overweights Limelight, li pounds; Socapa, 1. Henry of Trastamare, show, out. Silver Fringe was off well in motion, Romanelli hustled her along and she opened up a winning gap in the first furlong, but tired at the end and had to stand a long hard drive to last long enough to beat out Miriam W. The latter finished resolutely. Versifier was in a pocket for the first quarter and closed a big gap, but tired when called on. Sweet Nell was never prominent and ran much below her best form. Ruby Ray swerved across the track in the stretch run and bumped into the winner. Compass finished going fast and outgamed Lofter when it came to a drive. Aratoma was skillfully ridden, raced along with Ranco for the first half, saved ground at the turn into the homestretch, finished fast and was going away in the last sixteenth. Tom Kingsley began slowly, but made up a lot of ground while rounding the far turn a.nd just managed to last long enough to stall off Bengal. The latter was badly ridden and apparently beaten in the stretch, but came again at the end and would have been second in another stride. Scratched 37873 Katie Gibbons, 105. Aratoma, show, evens.
