GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Says the Cincinnati Enquirer of yesterday: "By far the best work of the year over the Latonia track was a mile in 1:441, by the bay colt Bernays in the string of Rome Respess yesterday morning. As deep as it is In dust at present the track is fully three seconds slow. This son of Wadsworth is the one selected by Mr. Respess from his candidates for the American Derby to bet on in the future books. He placed the bet with Jim OLeary while he was at Hot Springs last winter, and it now appears that he has made no mistake* in his selection. In his work yesterday the colt carried fully 120 pounds, and stepped the route without urging, finishing with no apparent distress. Dick Welles, another of the Respess candidates for the American Derby, went the mile in 1:45 easily. Bernays is eligible to the .Latonia Derby, as is also his stable companion, Collonade, but Mr. Respess says that he will not be represented in the race. That race, said he, looks like a gift for a good horse in fit condition, but I cant get either of mine ready in time to, go a mile and a half next Wednesday without rushing them to a degree which might knock them out for the balance of the year. I wont take those chances. "
