LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Entries for Hawthornes opening day can be made with Ed Jasper at Worth, C. Campbell at Harlem and Sheridan Clark at Hawthorne. C. E. Mahone stated after the finish of the Calumet Stakes that his colt Banter, which ran third, would not again be started until the M. Lewis Clark Stakes is carded for decision at Harlem. Several riders, including H. Booker and J. Winkfield, arrived yesterday from Latonia. The latter accepted several mounts yesterday. Jockey Coburn was given to understand by his employer, G. C. Bennett, that no more nonsense would be tolerated, and that if he wanted to ride he must cut out some of his capers. The lecture did a lot of good for the jockey rode in brilliant form and showed some of his old-time vigor and alertness during the running of a race and at the post. Gilfain propped as Starter Dwyer released j the barrier in the Calumet Stakes and was practically left at the post Jockey William, who rode the horse, sent him after the field and he closed up steadily, and was only ,beaten a length by Prince of Endurance. Peter Pauls performance in the fifth race yesterday, from a time standpandInt, was the second best ever witnessed on a Chicago track. The only other performance that excels Peter Pauls was that of Hargis, which as a two-year-old ran the same distance at Harlem In 53g, or a fifth of a second faster. Continued on second page. LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Continued from first page. C. E. Durnell had Lucien Appleby out on the track after the last race yesterday and he was given a six furlongs work-out at a slow pace. Joe Yaeger, the young plunger, was among the visitors yesterday and cashed several large bets during the day. Owners and trainers are notified to secure their badges and their stable badges today, as no badges will be issued tomorrow. Jockey F. Rutter left yesterday for Toronto, Ont., to ride in the Kings Plate, which will be run Saturday, the opening day of the Woodbine Park meeting. The time made by Prince Webb established a new record for the distance over the Worth track. The previous best time made over the course for one mile and seventy yards was made by La Goleta, which ran the distance in l:43i. Several owners caught the first mile of the Calumet Stakes in 1:40 flat and the full distance in 1:47, or a second faster than the official time.
