EASTERN TURF TALK. Touching interesting matters that cropped up at Morris Park Tuesday, the New York Sun of Wednesday says: *E. B. Smathers, owner of McChesney, visited the track yesterday as one of the passengers on the tally-ho coach Good Times. Sensationalists immediately started the story that Mr. Smathers was going to hunt up E. R. Thomas, the new owner of Ilermis. Mr. Smathers, however, did not see Mr. Thomas. The owner of McChesney said: " Of course, I am willing to make a match, for I like to see a two-horse race. But it is up to Mr. Thomas to make overtures. McChesney will start in the Harlem National Handicap at Chicago and will later come to Saratoga, where he is engaged in all of the big races. Ilermis will then have a chance to take his measure. "John E. Madden, always with an eye to business, sold two more of his two-year-olds yesterday. Thomas "Watt, owner of the Osceola Stable, was the purchaser, paying 1903.sh,000 for the filly Marmee, by Mirthful-Pride of Montrose, and ,000 for the filly Marriage Belles, by Russell— Miss Mary. "J. Boden has refused an offer of 0,000 for his crack filly Itosetint, which won the Clare-mont Handicap from Lux Casta in handsome style on Monday. "Luke Ward, which won the last race after breaking down, was owned as a two-year-old by W, C. Whitney, who took him to England. The horse passed into the hands of Eugene Leigh, who sold him, together with New York, to H. M. Ziegler. " Pittsburg Phil announces that he will sell all of his horses shortly, including Grand Opera, Stevedore, Chilton and others, and will retire from the turf, except from a betting standpoint. Turfmen say that the suspension of jockey Shaw has had something to do with the plungers change of base. "Sir Faust, Huntressa and De Sanet have been declared out of the Suburban Handicap. "The selling race war seems to be without end. II. F. Meyer got into the game yesterday again by bidding up Father Bill Dalys Torchlight to ,500, 00 over the entered price, when Daly protected the mare with an extra . Meyer did this to get even for the claiming .of his filly Miss Nancy the other day by James Rowe, who turned her over ■ to Father Bill, after Meyer had run up Fox-hall P. Keenes Wizard for the second time. . Daly tried to sell. Miss Nancy back to Meyer yesterday for profit, but Meyer sarcastically told the Sage of Hartford to see Rowe. "When The Carmelite won the first race, Gwyn Tompkins boosted the price tp ,900, trainer Burlew retaining the colt with the usual bid. "E. R. Thomas has practically decided to start his good colt Yardarm in the Brooklyn Handicap. "W. Shields starts today for Toronto with Andy Williams, which will start in the Toronto Cup."
