GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The reported sale for 5,000 of Major Daingerfleld to W. B. Leeds by C. H. Draper, who bought the great four-year-old at the Brady-McLewee dissolution sale, completes the second big turf deal within the past few days, the other being the purchase by E. R. Thomas of last years champion, Hermis, for the reported price of 0,000 from L. V. Bell. Both of these purchases were made by newcomers to the turf world, and it speaks volumes for the prosperity and popularity of the sport when new aspirants for racing honors are willing to pay small fortunes for the honor of owning thoroughbreds with a chance of winning one or another of the big handicaps. The new owners of Hermis and Major Daingerfleld have sprung with a single bound into the front rank of turfmen, and the whole racing world will be pleased to see them reap the reward of their liberality with the blue ribbon trophy emblematic of a Brooklyn, Suburban or other big prize. At the conclusion of the Louisville meeting Secretary Price said: "Well, the meeting is over, and it was one of the best ever held at Churchill Downs. Financially, it was the most successful. We were favored by beautiful weather from start to finish, and the patrons supported us in splendid fashion to the last day. The sport has been clean and interesting. A good, high-class fifteen-days meeting is just what Louisville wants, and that we will try to have every year. A fall meeting could be held, and we might make several thousand dollars, but we could not get the best horses to race here in the fall, and we want nothing but high-class racing at this track." "Jimmie" Mclnerny, a well-known jockey on Chicago racetracks, died at the City Hospital, Louisville, Wednesday night as a result of injuries sustained by a fall from the horse Wavelow, in the last race at Churchill Downs Monday. He suffered from a concussion of the brain. An operation was performed on him by Drs. Coon and Clendenin and his skull trephined Tuesday night, but to no avail. The little fellow died without regaining consciousness.
