LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. The Flight Stakes, which is carded for decision today, brings together the cream of the sprinting division of the middle west and should result in one of the best races witnessed at Hawthorne. In the original entries fifteen are carded to start, but of this number four are looked upon as certain absentees. The horses which will probably not line up to the barrier are St. Minor, Nellie Waddell, Burnie Bunton and Scorpio. The overnight betting gave Beau Ormonde and the Durnell and Herz entry the post of honor at 3 to 1, next in order came Skilful 4 to 1, Drake entry 4 to 1, Organdie 10 to 1, Waina-moinen 15 to 1, Gregor K. 20 to 1, and Ahola and First Chip as the extreme outsiders with 50 to 1 against their chances. Safeguard was bid up ?300 over his entered price of 5500 by "Kansas" Price and bid in by his owner with an advance of . J. A. Drakes American Derby candidate Savable, which is carded to start in the Flight Stakes today, is reported to have worked after the closing race on Thursday six furlongs in 1:19. Owner Fred Cook bet J. OLeary 00 yesterday on his horse Linguist to win the Harlem National Handicap, receiving odds of 30 to 1. After the bet was recorded OLeary cut the price down to 15 to 1. Jockey Bobbins, who rode Lampoon, the winner of the fifth race yesterday, came near to throwing the race away. He eased his mount up through the last sixteenth and failing to notice El Ghor coming with a rush came near to being beaten out and only the fact that the finishing line was close by saved the backers of Lampoon. After the jockey had weighed in Judge Bryan gave him a lecture that will long be remembered by the deminutive rider. Several owners who were in the paddock yesterday gave it as their opinion that the track was fully five seconds slower in the middle than next to the inner rail.
