The race throughout was practically confined to the first two. Astarita forced the pace throughout and came away gamely at the end. Cinquevalli, also favored at the start, ran lapped on the winner for half the journey, but failed to stay as well. City Bank is a slow beginner and out of place in sprints. Forced out of his position directly after the start, he only commenced to pass horses in the last three furlongs, coming through next to the rail in the stretch like a cyclone. Orloff tired in the stretch. Royal Summons raced on the outside and steadily improved his position and ran a good race. Sambo, away very badly, closed a tremendous gap and, leading when the field was straightened for home, only cantered at the finish. Courtenay received a lucky start and, showing improved early speed, held sway to the stretch, where he commenced to tire and was evidently short. Ben Howard swerved all over the course in the last furlong after having passed the majority of the field. The Regent always had clear sailing and ran well up. Coruscate, next to the rail and away badly, was running on horses in front of her and hopelessly pocketed from start to finish and may have been best. Dark Planet made up twenty lengths. Sparkle Esher was a good filly badly treated. Potente seems out of form. Scratched— 393893Bar Le Due, 104. ■ Sambo, show, evens. Courtenay, show, 4 to 1. Ben Howard, show, 2* to 1. Agnes Brennan ran as If she outclassed the field, quickly worked Into the lead from a bad start and was never extended., Mimon moved up fast on the inside and was shut off by the winner on the turn, but came around and was always a safe second Moorhen finished fast after going wide on the turns. Florizel was prominent to the stretch, where he fell away. Brooklyn is a promising colt, got away badly and ran very green, but when he got down to work in the last quarter was closing up like a cyclone. Reliable, which towered above his opponents like a giant, negotiated the sharp turns with extreme difficulty, but played a waiting game for six furlongs with his head high in the air. Apparently beaten on the stretch turn, he came with marvelous and unexpected rapidity in the straight and was much the best. Fire Eater, quickly improved over his previous race, went away from the post fast and made the running for seven furlongs and held on surprisingly well. He is best in the mud always. River Pirate simply failed to stay, probably due to the weight conditions. Rightful was soundly beaten at the end of six furlongs and barely held his own in the stretch and was running out besides. Mesmer was outclassed. Scratched— 39323Golden Maxim, 118; 39356 St. Daniel, 118; 39416 Royal Summons 118 Reliable, show, out. Fire Eater, show, 8 to 5. River Pirate, show, out. Alertness at the post and throughout the race characterized the behavior of both horse and jockey. She was always prominent, came fast in the stretch and won going away. Stamping Ground showed sudden improvement,. foroing a good stiff pace almost througout and hung on gamely in the long stretch drive. Flocarline delayed her run too long and finished out a fast final quarter, but could never gel up. Lux Casta trailed apparently well in hand, but failed to come on when called on three lurlongs from the finish. She was an easing up fourth, but came out of the race lame and cn the verge ot a breakdown. Daisy Green followed the pacemaker closely for six furlongs then quit. Luminosity closed up considerable ground and finished with a rush. Toy San nearly left, made up fifteen lengths on the winner and, going like a cyclone at the end. must have been much the best.
