LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. J. A. Drakes American Derby candidate Savable, which now occupies the post of honor in the future book betting, was given a work-out of one mile over the Hawthorne track. The Futurity winner went the distance in a smooth, even way and although covering the distance in l:4Ci, he did not seem a bit distressed and appeared as if he would like to continue running. Manager Kuhl received word from Barney Schreiber that his filly Dorice would be sent here from Latonia to run in the Lassie Stakes today. S. C. Hildreth, trainer of McChesney, tried to have him excused from starting yesterday, claiming that the horse would be at a disadvantage in the going and would not run to his best form. Judge Bryan, however, would not permit the horses withdrawal, and informed the trainer that a majority of the people present had journeyed to the track to see the Smathers crack perform.and as it was known that McChesney was in a fit condition to race he did not think it would be doing the right thing to disappoint them. McChesneys performance yesterday was anything but brilliant, even though he did run over a track supposedly not to his liking, and the race should be thrown out of future calculations. It was reported before the race that the horse was fit for a bruising race, having been worked repeatedly over the Harlem track, his last workout being one mile with 135 pounds up, in 1:44*. Judge Bryan stated yesterday that a final decision in the Ezell-Birkenruth-Flying Torpedo case would be handed down today. Owner T. C. McDowell was among the visitors at Hawthorne yesterday and stated that all his horses had shipped here from Latonia in splendid style, and Allan-a-Dale would be a certain starter in the Harlem National Handicap next Saturday. Trainer W. Phillips stated yesterday that Linguist would be the only Cook representative in the Harlem National Handicap field, and that Lendin would be given a trial this morning in company with Linguist, and should it prove satisfactory the horse will be shipped tonight to St. Louis to start in the Club Members Handicap, which will be run Saturday. M. H. Tichenor stated yesterday that should Flocarline continue to show the good form she is showing at present in the east she will be shipped to Chicago and started in the American Derby. Their present reliance for that event, Early, will also be started. With Flocarline will also be sent several other horses from the Tichenor eastern string, which will be started at the Washington Park meeting, and will, while here, be trained by P. Dunne. Judge Himes has fully recovered from his recent illness and is being exercised daily.
