Scott broke in front and forced the pace to the stretch, where he came away decisively and was easing up slightly at the end. Astarita followed the winners pace closely and held on gamely in a long stretch drive, but at no time appeared to have a chance to beat him. Ingold gave the Schorr colt an argument for the lead in the first quarter, but was crowded at the half and forced to pull up, but came again in the last quarter and was wearing Astarita down for second place. Toledo suffered at the start from his jockeys lack of alertness, but displayed brilliant speed in racing into a contending position, fell away on the turn, and closed up like a cyclone at the end. Orloff got away poorly and finished going well. Contend was badly outrun in the early stages, but finished going fast. Won easily; second driving. Strikealight raced into the lead early and easily outpaced, outjumped and outstayed his field. Judge Phillips fenced skilfully except at the last obstacle, where he all but fell and, running kindly on the flat, outstayed Hark Forward in the final drive. The latter trailed under clever guidance and always appeared to have a lot in reserve, but he unexpectedly failed to make good when let down in the last quarter and was probably short. Lord Radnor was badly ridden and jumped timidly after his first blundering jump, in which he carried away several fence rails. He was given a cowardly and inefficient ride throughout. Foxhunter, a splendid looking animal, and which had schooled in a satisfactory manner, went right to the front, but fell at the first Liverpool and might have won but for the mishap. Magistrates preliminary was very unsatisfactory, in the race he was an entirely different horse. Bullman sent him into the lead at the start and he was never in danger afterward. The field was driving early, to keep within striking distance, and they all tired badly in the last quarter. Gettysburg, the half brother to Schreibers great horse Bannockburn, in his first start broke green, but displayed amazing speed when he got down to work and rah around the field on the turns as if they were anchored and finished out gamely, he is evidently a coming crackerjack. Dimple was a prominent contender for second place throughout and ran a game race. Harangue, away poorly on the outside and apparently bearing out on the turns, suddenly loomed up strong when the field straightened out for the wire, but again bore out near the end. Andrew Mack, away badly and hopelessly outrun to the stretch, closed up with a phenomenal rush and ran an improved race over his preceding one. Steelmaker went a very fast half. Jacquin, on the rail, was crowded out at the half, but recovered the lost ground on the turn after which he tired and was eased up. Scratched— Alliance, 115; 39293 Sir Carter, 112. Whorler forced the pace from the start and decisively outraced and outstayed his field. He showed extraordinary form in the sloppy going and was much the best today. Golden Maxim quickly gave evidence of inability to stride freely in the going and very early in the race appeared to be a beaten horse, but under a hard drive he gradually closed up on the leader and at the end of a mile and a quarter appeared to have a chance, but Whorler again drew away in the run home. The Golden Garter colt ran a thoroughly game race and would probably have an easy task to reverse this running on a good track. Merry Acrobat raced head and head with the winner for the first mile and on the backstretch appeared able to go to the front at will. He succumbed at the end of nine furlongs, but held on gamely and was a fairly close up third. Flying Jib, far outclassed, was under the whip at the end of the first half, being always hopelessly outrun. No show betting. 39696 FIFTH RACE— 5 12 longs. 00 added. 2-year-olds. Selling. Listawav away badly, immediately commenced to improve his position and at the end finished like a cyclone. Sweet Tone raced throughout on her own courage, overcame interferences and by going wide on the stretch turn her incompetent jockey tossed off second place. Bronx was outrun, but his luck at the start and clear sailing enabled him to apparently last longer than usual. Pleasant Memories finished going well. Won easily; second driving Kingraine displayed improved form, led unextended throughout and was the medium of a big coup. Royal Pirate, under the light weight, sustained his speed unexpectedly well but was favored with luck at the start and had clear sailing all the way. Tioga appeared to be the only serious contender for seven furlongs and her effort to beat the winner made her tire at the end and lose second place as she was easily the best of the others Spring Silk went surprisingly well in the race. Bar Le Due got away badly, but closed up fifteen or twenty lengths in the last half, under inefficent handling. Nic Longworth got away slowly and was another horse that had no chance with a small jockey. He rated along at a steady clip from start to finish and at a mile and a quarter would have won off by himself Arden tired in the stretch but finished close up.
