GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Seth Jacobs increased his string at New Orleans last Monday by the addition of the two-year-old Banwell, which he purchased of Charles Ellison. Last spring, during the Memphis meeting, Jacobs bought Banwell of Joe Hawkins for ,500. Ellison liked the colt, and Jacobs let him have it at the same figure which he- paid for him. Banwell afterward developed into a bleeder. Banwell has been heavily backed by Ellison in most of his recent races. After his disappointing exhibition Monday Ellison offered the colt back to Jacobs for 25, and the offer was promptly accepted. Mc, Chicago. 1 The "about" six furlongs course at Gravesend is 165 feet short. 2 The New Futurity full course at Sheeps-head Bay is seven furlongs in length. 3 The Withers mile at Morris Park is an exact mile. 4 The Eclipse Course at Morris Park is three-quarters of a mile straight. 5 The Futurity Courses at Oakland and Ingle-side are 170 feet short of three-quarters of a mile. 6 There is no Futurity Course at Morris Park. M. N. Macfarlan, secretary of the New Memphis Jockey Club, left Memphis last Monday for Louisville and Lexington in the interest of the stakes for the spring meeting at Montgomery Park. Increased added money in a majority of the stakes and larger purses and overnight handicaps than in previous years have been substituted, and a record-breaking list of entries is expected by the Memphis association.
