RAINING AT NEW ORLEANS JAMES BEATTIES BELLE OF THE BAY WINS THE BABY RACE. Albert Simons Seems to Have Best Youngsters-Lady Vashti Too Much for Calabash Jockey Slack is Improving. New Orleans, La., January 2. The "baby race" was the feature of an excellent eanl at City Park this afternoon, but the elements intervened and long before it was time for the debutantes to go to the post a heavy fog enveloped most of the course and made the start and the first part of the struggle hardly discernible. This took a lot of Interest away from the race, but might as well have been so, considering the easy winner in which Belle of the Bay ran away from her opponents. This fleet miss is by the Futurity winner. Ballyhoo Bey. and comes from tlie stable of Albert Simons, whose Baleshed won the race for youngsters yesterday. But Simons does not own Belie of the Bay. She is the property of James Beattie, a New York turfman. It was conunon gossip among the trial watchers that Belle of the Bay had worked well for the race and the fact that Nlcol had the mount served to make her nnd her stalde companion. Lady Maid, the choices. Even money and C to 5 were the prevailing quotations, lint at that price the pair was well backed, as was the Ally French Empress, a supposed good thing, her price going from tens to fours. Generally the starter has plenty of trouble with yonngsters, but the band he handled today evidently had had proper schooling at the barrier. They behaved well and it was not long before they got away. Jack Phillips Our Maid .was quickest to break, but Aunt TIHIe was also well up. On the turn Nlcol gave Belle of the Bay her head and the -contest was over. Belle of the Bay is a well turned filly, but not much in size. What there Is of her, however, seems to be of the right material and of the compact type. Itain came down heavily after the two-year-old race and the sixth and seventh races were run over a sticky track. It turns out that jockey Johnny Slack, who met with an accident while riding Sweet Jane in the steeplechase yesterday, is not as seriously injured as was first reported. Slacks skull is not fractured. His nose was broken when the mare stepped on him and lie was cut up some about the head. Bad News showed by his race today that he is rounding to again. "Father Bill" Daly won his first race of the meeting when Listless galloped home In front of her opponents in the first race. The card at Crescent Park was featureless except for a handicap at five furlongs, which brought together some fair sprinters including Calabash, Van Ness and Lady Vaslifi. The task of conceding eleven pounds and three years to Ladj- Vashti was too much for Calabash and his long string of victories was broken, the Batcheler mare winning Handily from the Price colt. Twenty-one books were in line, but business was light, the crowd being a bit chary about speculating on tlie big, unwieldy and poor fields. T. H. Madigan attempted a coup with Alibert in the second race, but failed by the smallest of margins. Alibert was ridden by "Long Shot" Conley and tjred slightly in the final drive, with the result that Slow Poke beat him. Decisions reversed meant a difference of 2,000 to Madigan. After Bonnie Prince Charlies victory he was bid up by "Texas Smith." owner of Decoration, from ,000, liis entered price, to ,500 and retained. Antimony, well backed in tlie fifth race.- Buffered from crowding and fell, his rider escaping miraculously from injury. Pepper Dixon and Tom Bone were ordered withdrawn by the judges from the first and second races respectively. The former because no jockey could be secured and the latter because of lack of identification. Jockey Willie Shaw has been asked by Willie Shields to come here. He is expected to arrive here tlie last part of this week. An offer, said to be 0,000, was refused by Captain Jim Williams for Phil Finch. The tender was made by Willie Shields. Light rain began falling shortly after the third lace and Indications are the track will again be in a heavy state tomorrow. The following declarations from the Crescent City Derby were made January 1: Beeehwood, Trigg Morse, Hooray, Flavigny, Massey, Cary, Caprice, Hurbotin, Fargo. Birmingham, Sidney F., Huron. I.illieck, Klingsor, Chauucey Olcott, Remington, Floral, Haughty, The Bam, Pepper Dixon, Sly Ben, Swell Girl, Bitter Brown. There still remain 34 eligibles.
