ATTEMPT TO OPEN RILEY POOLROOM FAILS. Monroe County Officials Act Promptly Upon Orders From Attorney-General Stead. St. Louis, Mo.. January 20. The attempt of St. Louis people to open ami operate a poolroom on Illinois soli appears to have been effectually frustrated. In Monroe County, at a itoint about nine miles southwest of Hast St. Louis on the Mobile, and Ohio Railroad, several carloads of cinders were dumped, a side track was put in, a truckless box car was rigged "up as a railroad station and a spacious frame building was erected and equipped with up-to-date poolroom paraphernalia anil telegraph apparatus. The name Ulley was given to the place.- Edward W. Fitzgerald, of this city, was named as manager and announcement was made that the room would open Saturday. Two special trains were put ou for the conveyance of would-be patrons to the place. When the first train reached Ulley Saturday afternoon manager Fitzgerald found Sheriff Thompson and States Attorney Teeklenburg of St. Clair County In waiting. The manager was told that be could not open the . room. lie questioned the jurisdiction of the St. Clair County ollielals and was quoted the new Illinois law which gives the authorities .in any county in the state the right to prevent the operation of a poolroom within 025 feet of the border of that county. The room at Ulley Is within 200 feet of the St. Clair County boundary. Manager Fitzgerald loaded his visitors on the train ami told them to come back today. But there was nothing doing today. Tho attention of Attorney-General Stead had been called to the matter and he gave States Attorney Dan McGlynu of Monroe County instructions to prevent the opening of the poolroom even If It became necessary to call out the State militia to do it. Attorney MeGIynn has sued out an injunction against the opening of the room. The special trains have been taken off and the M. and O. people say "there will be no more stops at Ulley until further orders." ,
