NOTES OF THE TURF. Governor Davis is threatening to "put the lid on" Hot Springs. Stewards of the Western Jockey Club will meet next Monday. Nine stakes of the New Louisville Jockey Club will close tomorrow. C. K. Burnett has surrendered his contract on apprentice jockey Harvey N. Cole. A portion of the McCafferty string will be shipped from Ascot Iark to Hot Springs, It is said. Clarence II. Mackays good mare Acldalle has foaled a chestnut colt by Bauastar at Kingston Stud in Kentucky. H. B. Wittenberg now holds the contract on apprentice jockey W. It. A. Walker. He bought it from H. W. Wallhauser. The statement that Lord Itoseberys well known sire, Velasquez, has been destroyed is without foundation. London Sportsman. E. S. J., dam of the two-year-old De Oro, foaled a chestnut filly by Handsel on January 22 at Caveland Stud in Kentucky. From Los Angeles comes a rumor that George Rose and Jack Atkin have had a misunderstanding and it W whispered that libel suits may follow. Scott Hudson has returned to Lexington. Ky.. from New Orleans and has begun the preparation of his horses at the Kentucky Association track for the spring campaign. Carroll Reld says he expects much of Bayonet, the three-year-old half brother to The Picket, this year. Both these horses are moving along in satisfactory style at Louisville. The stallions Maddison and St. George have been sent to Howard Darnabys farm near lixlngton, Ky.. and there will be bred to all the marcs belonging to Baker and Gentry. James OBrien, the American steeplechase jockey, has to his credit sixteen winning mounts in England this winter. He will come to America in April to ride for Grant Hugh Brown. Mutable, the bay filly which carried the colors of A. H. and D. II. Morris and finished fourth in the second race at Crescent Park Monday, is the first of the get of that good horse, Compute to race. Jockey William Wileys apprentice allowance will expire February 8; Frank Graham, February !; John J. Russell, February 10; Levernc Sewell, February 17, and Wesley D. Freeman, February 2-1. . Noctulform, a New Zealand four-year-old, purchased last year by Mr. Jumps Buchanan, arrived safely in England and Joined Major Edwards string at Og-iHmrne on January 12. "Hold on Jimmy" got a calling down from Manager Brooks at Ascot Park last week for his treatment of horses at the post. Starter Holtman exchanged a few hot words. with the manager and a report went the rounds that the starter had handed lu his resignation. This was later denied.
