SYSTEM IS BAD IN REGISTRARS OFFICE. In the matter of allowing ami recording names for horses, there is a lack of system, If not gross carelessness in the office of Registrar Wheeler. The latest instance is reported from Memphis. Among the two-year-olds in the string of J. O. Keene there Is a bay filly by Star Ruby Wi-Nc-Ma. Mr. Keene asked that the name Fantana be registered for her. He received notification that this selection had been allowed and registered. There is now a three-year-old by the name of Fantana. It is the grey filly by First Mate Pomona, which raced last year in the colors of George Holle. la the bara of C. R. Ellison at Memphis there Is a two-year-old chestnut tilly by George Kessler Aunt Tessa the dam of Rams Horn, which was allowed the name of Rollicking Girl by the registrar. In the string of James R. Keene the filly by KingstonDuchess Caroline is also called Rollicking Girl. There are now two three-year-olds under the name Red Ruby. One Is the buy colt by Star Ruby Firenzcta. The other is the bay filly by Rubicon Ramlet, by Azra. For purposes of distinction in its charts, Dally Racing Form was compelled to affix II. to tlie name of the. latter. Kiamesha and Kla-mesha II. is another illustration of this unwarranted condition. Then there are the cases of Gossiper II., Mohawk II.. Happy Jack II., Bummer II., Maxette and Maxetta, Alamausor and Almanzor, Monia and Moais, aad scores of others which are siaiply poison to the race-going public in the confusion created by their similarity. When the registrar allows a name lu duplicate lie is violating the third section of Rule 30 of the Jockey Clubs rules of racing, which reads: "No name that has been employed during the previous five years, either in the stud or on the turf, shall be duplicated. Nor can a name be claimed for any horse not registered as a foal." The committee of the Jockey Club which is giving Its attention to the supervision and publication ot Volume IX of the Stud Book, would do well to set Registrar Wheeler and his clerks aright in the nomenclature department. A word or two of caution to the proofreader on the Racing Calender about the mistakes ia the list of reglstred foals of 1304 Is also iu order.
