ASCOT DERBY IS TO BE RUN NEXT SATURDAY. Dr. Gardner and Sir Wilfred Seem to Outclass all Other Probable Starters. Next Saturday the first Derby of 190G will be run at Ascot and if Barney Schrelber sends Dr. Gardner down from San Francisco to measure strides with Sir Wilfred, the meeting of the two best three-ytaf-olds seen in public action so far this year will invest the race with more than an ordinary measure of interest. The Ascot Derby is run over the Brooks Course, which is 219 feet short of a full mile and a quarter. It has ,000 added, received 77 nominations and if ten start, will be worth ,4G0 net to the winner. It is n penalty and allowance race, the extreme penalty being five pounds and the greatest allowance fourteen pounds, this being for maidens. Through winning the Follansbee Handicap January ! ! . , . i i . i . ; - . I 0, Dr. Gardner has acquired the full penalty and will have to carry 127 pounds to Sir Wilfreds 122. Apparently the other starters will come from the following: Vino, 122; Loyal Front, 117; Charley, 117; W. H. Carey, 122; Itey del Mundo, 117; Starling, 112; Chantilly, 117; Retropaw, 117; Two Bills, 117; Mastcrson, 117; Hermitage, 117; Nealon, 117; Ramus, 117; Good Luck, 117 and Ilammeraway, 117. Of these Vino, W. II. Carey, Good Luck, Loyal Front, Itetropaw, Hermitage, Nealon and Hammer-away have been credited with smart performances in the course of the present California racing season, but all seem to be outclassed by Dr. Gardner and Sir Wilfred. So far these two colts have won all of their 1900 races. Dr. Gardners first race of the year was In a seven furlongs dash at Oakland with SS pounds up, which he won in 1:25 j, and his second was for the Follanslee Highwoight Handicap January 0, which lie won with 110 pounds up, again covering its seven furlongs distance" in 1 :2."J and easily defeating Nagazain, S, 109; Tocolow, 5, 125; Neva Lee. 4, 124; Red Lear, 4, 115; Beau Ormonde, S, 114; Princess Titania, 8, 12?.; Bearcatcher, 5, 140 and H. L. Frank, 5, 114, a brilliant performance for a colt of his age. January 10, he took up 100 pounds and easily defeated Lubln, 0, 117; Red Leaf, 4, 100 and Gregor 1C, C, 110, at a mile and a sixteenth, covering the distance in 1:452 and running the first mile in 1:39 without having at any time been fully extended. His last race was a dash of five furlongs at Oakland February 2. ne carried 109 pounds, ran the distance in 1:00, won eased up and defeated; Fireball, 4, 111!; Ethel Barrymore, 4, SI ; Ruby, 4, IOC and Im Joe, 3, 90. He is a slayer, a weight carrier and extremely fleet. As a two-year-old Sir Wilfred started In five and won four races and was voted unquestionably the best two-year-old In California. This year he has started in three races arid won them all. His first start was in a five furlongs dash for three-year-olds at Ascot Park, January 4, which he won In 1:001, with -115 pounds np, defeating. Brilry. JHectpranjl six others with ease. He w a "taken up "to Oakland aud won a dash of three-qu: ters for three-year-olds January 27, defeating Pal. Boloman and four others, with groat ease in 1:13 fiat. Taken back to Ascot he defeated Bribery, Don Domo, Mistys Pride, Chieftain and Ambitious at five furlongs in a canter running the distance in 501 and winning so easily that many averred he could have beaten .59 V he lieen sent along at the extreme of his power. Of his tremendous speed there Is no question, but there U an opinion existent to the effect that he will not stay, over a Derby distance. This is not based on anything that has marked his racing, but on his breeding on his dams side. She is a full, sister to the fast sprinter May W., which in her time won many races over Chicago tracks and the breeding of which has always been In dispute. It may very well turn out that Sir Wilfred will stay as far and fast as anybodys horse, Assuming that the Ascot Derby field will come from the seventeen named, their performances as two-year-olds are here given: Horses.
