JOHN CARROLL WINS THE REX HANDICAP. New Orleans, La., February 27. Mardi Gras visitors swelled the attendance at City Park this afternoon. It was the largest gathering that has turned out at the new track this winter. The crowd packed the grandstand and tilled the spacious lawns. An excellent card was provided for the afternoon s entertainment, the feature of which was the Rex Handicap, iu which a field of the best milers on the ground went to the post. John Carroll was the winner, lieating the Derby colt. Debar, a scant length while, Shawana, an added starter, finished third, beaten a length for second, place. King Leopold, a recent recruit from the old track, making his first start at City Park, won the opening race. He showed rare good form, winning in a canter by four lengths after making the pace. Two of the winners were from the stable of Jack Phillips, while Rertha E., another of his representatives, was beaten a neck in the closing race. Three of tlie finishes were close and in two of them, short heads separated the first two.
