POLICE PREVENT VIOLENCE. DISHONEST JOCKEY IS RULED OFF AFTER STEEPLECHASE AT CITY PARK. Two Derbys Carry Interest For Today Lady Navarre and Monterey the Respected Favorites Good Footing: Is Expected. Now Orleans. La., March 10. It was due entirely to the police that a tragedy was averted after the running of the steeplechase over the short course at City Tark this afternoon. E. Miller had the mount on Jndge Nolan, the second choice in the betting, and his efforts to place the horse outside the money were so obvious as to be understood by the most unsophisticated among the spectators. Despite Millers Jiu Jitsu hold, the horse outgamed the rider at the finish and was an easy second. There was a riotous demonstration in front of the judges stand when Miller was called up by the officials. The jockey was immediately ruled off and ordered to leave the grounds. The crazed bettors seemed determined to visit their wrath upon Miller, but under an escort of police he reached the outside in safety. It was a bad day for favorites at both tracks here. Pirate, the winner of the jumping race at City Park being the only successful choice in the thirteen races. The sport was most ordinary. The bookmakers were probably the-only -genuinely .pleasel people in attendance. Usury might have won the third race at the old track had L. Smith ridden more urgently. It appeared as if he underestimated Dan McKenna in the closing rush. Interest, of course, centers in the Derbys that are to be decided tomorrow. The race at the old track is expected to furnish the better contest. Fast tracks are Improbable, but the superintendents arc putting forth their best efforts tonight and they say that the footing will surely be good by the time the races are called. The better the track at Crescent Park, the larger will be the odds against the Ellison entry and the shorter they will become about Guiding Star and Lotus Eater. Simons entry-Albert Simons, who has charge of Sim Deimels Rickey, an eligible for the Crescent City Derby as well as the City Park Derby, contemplated starting the colt in the former event. Simons this morning sent a note to Secretary Nathanson, of the Crescent City Jockey Club, asking that the horse be carded as a starter. Nathanson acknowledged receipt of the note and replied that, under rule 238 of the Western Jockey Club, Rickey was disqualified; and furthermore there was a forfeit of 3 standing against Simons and again that Deimels colors were not registered. Simons claims that if Rickey Is in bad standing now he was at the time of entry, as he was handling the colt when he was nominated for the Derby. Under the circumstances he does not feel that he should be held for forfeits. He forwarded letters to this effect to Secretary Nathanson, President Lawrence A. Young and Secretary Harvey Woodruff, of the Western Jockey Club. H. C. Riddle has disposed of Libation to J. W. Forman. The colt will start in the latters colors tomorrow. Jumes McCormlck will ship his horses to Sheeps-head Bay on Monday. Jockey Itomanelll leaves for Bennings on Monday, lie will ride as a free lance luring the coming aeason. Edward Corrigan left for Lexington this morning to look over his brood mares. Coylna, one of the starters in the seventh race ut City Park, fell just as the field reached the half wile pole and broke his leg. He was destroyed. -
