MINNIE ADAMS-GUIDING STAR. WINNERS OF CITY PARK AND CRESCENT CITY DERBYS AT NEW ORLEANS. Fred Cooks Filly Shows a Splendid Performance Sam Hilrircths Colt Under Masterful Handling Displays High Quality. New Orleans, La., March 17. Before a tremendous crowd ami over a traek that was far from Its fastest, Minnie Adams won the first City Park Derby this afternoon in record time for the course from a number of the best 3-year-olds that ever went to the iost at a New Orleans track. Hidden by Jockey Dave Nicol, and handled in superb fashion, Ied Cooks filly set her opponents a heart-breaking pace and won from end to end. The story of the race is told by the fractional time which was as follows: :35, 335, 48s. 1:00J, 1:13, 1:2G, 1:39, 1:522, 2:065. When the start came Minnie Adams began quickly and Nicol sent her right to the front. Passing the stand the first time around she had about one lengths advantage. Kercheval was next to the inside rail and creeping -up, with Kargut last and Monterey next. It was plainly evident this eaily in the struggle that Monterey was to cut no figure in -the running. He appeared to be laboring and was unable to raise a good gallop. Down the back-stretch Minnie Adams kept up her friciionless stride, reeling off eights, close to 12. Kercheval was her nearest attendant all the way. Allen was riding a good race on the latter, saving ground at every turn and nursing his mount along for a final effort in the stretch. Straightened out for the final run, Kercheval began to wear the flying leader down, but despite Allens effort, Kercheval could never get to .Minnie Adauls and the latter passed the winning mark a length in the lead, amid tumultous applause. Kercheval was second and Orbicular third, three lengths back. The disappointment of the race was Monterey. Much was expected of this colt, but he failed utterly. Debar had a lot of hard luck in the race. He was messed about, bumped into and cut oft in ilSL early running and at no slage--was- he ever prominent. Kargut trailed hia company the entire journey and was beaten off. Guiding Star, the colt purchased, some six weeks ago by Sam Hildreth from Newton Bennington, won the ninth running of the Crescent City Derby like a coir of high quality. C. It. Ellisons Lady Navarre, was the runner up and, thougli she was within a half length of the colt at the end, she never had a chance, to beat him. From the three eighths post, where the. pair hooked pp, to the finish Guiding Star always had it on her by a slight margin, and at the end she was wiilpped out, Willie the winner was only hand ridden. Lotus Eater, which finished third, two lengths back, was the only horse in the race to suffer from what is termed bad racing luck, and that was due more to poor judgment on the part of jockey Lyne than to any other cause. For the first furlong Disobedient, Guiding Star, Ben Hodder and Lotus Eater ran head and head, but Hearing the turn, where the rush came for positions, the other three began to outrun the Morris colt. Had Lyne gone to the whip at this stage he might have kept up, but he preferred to drop in behind, and when Disobedient and Guiding Star took the rail around the turn and James Reddick came up on the outside. Lotus Eater was in a pocket from which he could not free himself until on the turn into the back-stretch. From there on Lyne took the long route. At the first turn Redfern shot Ben Hodder to the front and began to set a fast pace. Martin rode a perfectly judged race, keeping about two lengths off the leader and made no move until James Reddick gave it up and Lady Navarre shot into his place. Martin had evidently figured out that this was the one he had to beat, and as soon as she came up the race was on in earnest. The two went to Ben Hodder together and from the three-eighths post until the field was around the stretcli turn, these three were running practically head mid head. In the run through the stretcli Guiding Star and Lady Navarre began to draw away with the colt about a neck in the lead. At the sixteenth post Sewell went, to the whip and the filly did the best she could in response, she was not equal to the strain and Guiding Star maintained his advantage to the end. Lotus Eater made up considerable ground through the stretcli, but lie only overtook the tired ones, beating Ben Hodder for-third place in the closing strides. Hildreth gave "Jack" Martin a fee of ,000 for his ride. An enormous crowd turned out, and the nineteen books in the ring were hopelessly inadequate to the betting demands, a goodly portion of the crowd not attempting to force its way into the jammed in-closure. "Jack" Martin leaves tomorrow for Canada to rest up prior to the Bennings meeting. "Airplant" Casey got in from Los Angeles in time In see the City Park Derby run. He arrived last night and will remain over until the opening of the Bennings meeting. William. Phillips, acting for Fred Cook, purchased of John Hyner this morning the mare Girdle, which will be shipiied to Cooks farm and bred to English Lad. ltome Kespcss came down from Cincinnati to see tlie City Park Derby.
