CLASSIFICATION OF THIS SEASONS TWO - YEAE - OLDS. With the racing season of 190G at its meridian, two-year-old form Is measurably well defined. It Is quite probable some youngsters of high class are in reserve, but the majority of the best colts and fillies have made their appearance. In some quarters it liar been assumed that the crop of this year is of inferior class. This may be true. On the other hand, the best of this year may be of quite high class. When the best two-year-olds of any season defeat each other it has become the fashion to decide that they are of inferior grade. This is a fallacy. A dozen high class two-year-olds racing against each other will win and lose in alternation as would a dozen of lower class. Certain it is that the leading two-year-olds have shown great speed, carried high weights easily, stayed gallantly as far as they have been asked to go and appear to compare favorably in the essential qualities of a racehorse with the good ones of years gone by. Mr. J. B. Haggin has said publicly that Water Pearl is the best two-year-old he has ever bred. That Is saying a great deaL If his judgment is not at fault it means that the best two-year-olds of this year are of extraordinary merit. Judged by the standard of uniform success after being educated to know what was required from him, Horace E. is the best two-year-old of the year. But he has not met Water Pearl. Ballot, Charles Edward, Peter Pan, Orau and other cracks of the season. Equally they have not measured strides with him. Fleet, powerful, game and of perfect action, he is a great colt by right of his deeds In public. He may only be the best of the western division. So far as the eastern division is concerned there seems little reason to doubt that Water Pearl Is the leader. Ballot defeated him in the first part of the Double Event and Oran in the Great Trial Stakes, but each was in receipt of seven pounds and there is a strong probability that he was not at his best when beaten. In other races he defeated Ballot and Oran decisively. The lesson of his defeats Is that while he is best of the eastern two-year-olds, BaUot, Oran, Superman, Gretna Green, Charles Edward and Ethon, to mention no others, are so hard after him that he must be on edge to hold them safe. There is another point in connection with the merits of the two-year-olds. Barney Schrelber bred, raised, raced and sold Horace E. He has all along asserted Jack Atkin is a better racer. There Is only one performance to his credit that appears to back up Schrelbers claim, but it may be significant. At Kenilworth Park, Buffalo, June 14, he carried 122 pounds to Ethons 112 and defeated him In a truly run race at five furlongs in l:00i. Right on the heels of this race Ethon was taken to New York and immediately won for himself a place among the best two-year-olds on. the metropolitan tracks. This makes Jack Atkin conclusively a ten pound better colt than Ethon. He may be much better than that. It is only at the end of a season that the two-year-olds can be authoritatively classified. Many great stakes for horses of that age remain to be contested. Estimates now formed will be confirmed, changed or, possibly, completely wiped out In the course of their running. However, in view of the approaching Saratoga meeting and the not far away Futurity, Daily Racing Form presents a table that may prove interesting and helpful to its readers. It gives a number of the best two-year-olds of the year in the estimated order of their merit, their races, victories, best single performance and money won: Horses. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. DIs. Time.
