JOHN CARROLL VICTORIOUS IN HANDICAP. Tom Hayes Engineers Coup With Binondo Miss Doyle Is Left at the Post. Cincinnati, O., July 28. An excellent card an especially good one for speculative purposes together with pleasant weather, attracted an unusually big holiday crowd to Latonia today. The twenty books did a big business. John Carroll, named both for the mile handicap and the condition race at a mile, was withdrawn from the latter and won the handicap, backed from 7 to 10 to 3 to 5. His impost was 122 pounds and he was conceding actual weight to such speedy ones as Braden, Major. T. J. Carson, Miltiades and John L. Inglis. The Corri-gan colt had his work cut out for him in the. early part of the journey and was badly pocketed for a short time on the upper turn. When Nicol found clear sailing for him In the stretch, however, he picked up his horses under a drive and was going away at the end. T. P. Hayes executed one of his famous coups with Binondo in the fifth race. Some slates posted four and five to one against the Hayes colt at tha opening, but- little or nothing was taken at these figures. Much, however, was bet at threes and the best to be had at post time was 7 to 5. The colt won easily from Ovelando and put up a splendid performance. Jockey Nicol began the day auspiciously, lauding his first two mounts, Friction and Elastic, both favorites, winners by good margins. He also won on John Carroll, but was left at the post on Miss Doyle, because of her action in bolting to the outer fence when the barrier was released. She was the best backed horse during the afternoon, with the exception of Binondo. In the first of the mile and a quarter races Xlugh. McCarren came near winning with a long shot when his Yachting Girl was beaten a head in a hard stretch drive by Juba, another outsider. Cotillion, at 30 to 1, the same odds at which she won recently, took the final race from Josiqs Jewel by a small margin. C. C. McCafferty had to pay 00 to retain Elastic, the amountMio was bid up over his entered price of 00. Alex Monroe, which started In the opening race, acted fractiously at the post and finally bolted to the outside fence, throwing his rider and running away into the stable yards. He was caught, brought back to the post and remounted. R. Wedderstrand, who rode him, had his leg slightly bruised by the fall. Diamond Betty will have to be turned out. She pulled up on the verge of breaking down after her race yesterday. Steeplechase jockey Ryan was badly shaken up by his fall on Weird yesterday. James Arthur purchased Golden Mineral .from P. Dunne today, paying the reported price of 00 for him. At a sale of horses in the paddock this afternoon, the following platers changed hands: Flammula, 50, J. Hennessey; King Abyssinia, 1906.sh3, J. Mc-Ciernand; Arable, 5, S. Myers. ,
