j SLOPPY TRACK AT LATONIA. ZINFANDEL THE ONLY FAVORITE TO WIN DURING THE AFTERNOON. Filler and Light Opera in Exciting Finish Nonlo Lucille Surprisingly Speedy Lady Charades Hard Luck Jockey Grasen Is Suspended. Cincinnati, O., August 20. The people who figured on a fast track at Latonia today had their calculations upset. A heavy shower, which left the track sloppy, did most of the upsetting. The horses and their riders did the rest. There was no vim to the racing, the starting was bad and the afternoons results were generally discouraging. The bookmakers had the best of It In every instance save when J. B. Respess and his connections backed Zinfandel, the steadily-improving daughter of the Commoner, with confidence. She was the only favorite to score during the afternoon. Long-priced horses took down the purses, beginning with the opening number, in which Erlcson outfpoted his company from the rise of the barrier. Montalban, the choice In this race, finished third and many disgruntled ones attributed his defeat mostly to the fact that his forelegs were encased in heavy bandages. The best finish was in the second race. PHIer and Light Opera, both outsiders, put up a terrific stretch struggle, PHIer only managing to win by inches In the final stride. Swiftwing, an odds-on choice, was probably best, but could not overcome the interference he was subjected to and landed Just outside the money. When Nonie Lucille led her opponents almost throughout the six furlongs journey and won decisively from Intense In the third race, there was general disapproval. In her race on Saturday the filly seemed dull and was with, difficulty induced to leave "the postrxoIay she showed plenty of speed, even in the paddock. Don Domo, making his first appearance in a long time, was the natural choice, but track conditions probably militated against him; He should show improvement. Lady Charades defeat in the last race was In line with her other hard luck races. She was beaten out by Prlncipia, which ran in considerably improved form over her last previous effort. Her victory marked the first win for T. P. Hayes since his departure for Saratoga. Mose Goldblatt today purchased from S. K. Hughes the filly Mlldrene on private terms. C. C. McCafferty has secured the contract on F. Hildebrand for the remainder of the season from Gilbert. The rider will rejoin Gilbert when racing; begins In California. Jockey Grasen, the Hungarian apprentice rider, who received his license today, had two mounts. On the last one starter Holtman suspended him, as he put it, because of the failure of the lad to understand the English language. A number of stables, including that of S. Louis, will ship to Douglas Park during the coming week. Louis today .secured a contract on the apprentice rider J. Russell.
