WHY THE DISTANCE WAS CHANGED. The Great Autumn Steeplechase, against the changing of the distance of which H. S. Page, during the Saratoga meeting, lodged a protest, ia to be run Saturday at Sheepshead Bay. A Coney Island Jockey Club oftlcial says It is not likely that Mr. Page will be Insistent in the matter since it has been explained to him that notice of the change from three miles to two and one-half miles was duly posted on the bulletin board and published In the Racing Calendar prior to the receipt of entries for the race. It was planned originally to have the race at three miles, but when It was found that at this distance three trips over the water and Liverpool would be necessary, the change to two and one-half miles was made.
