NEALON BREAKS A RECORD. WINS THE TURF HANDICAP, ONE MILE AND A QUARTER IN 2:05 3-5. Best Time Ever Made on a Grass Course in America Penarris Wins the Handicap for Two-year-olds Cottontown Scoies. Now York, Septemlicr 7. Barney Schreibers brilliant three-year-old, Nealon, by Sain, out of Sister Josephine, added immensely to his laurels today by winning the Turf Handicap, the Coney Island Jockey .Clubs annual mile and a quarter fixture-over the grass course in record time of 2:05i. Behind him were some of the best in the handicap division on the metropolitan tracks. The Missouri-bred colt carried a stable commission wagered at 7 to 1 and Mr. Schreiliers winnings are said to have exceeded 5,000. From a time standpoint the race was superlatively fast, lowing the track record of 2:0CJ, held by Star Bright, three-fifths of a second. From the first strides in the race Nealon was always in forward contention. He pursued the lightly weighted pacemaker closely and relentlessly and when called upon, passed him on the last turn as if lie was anchored. Drawing out into a commanding lead in he stretch he was striding home in leisurely fashion, when he was suddenly called upon to withstand Outcomes electrical end rush. He responded gamely and won out holding his own. It was the best race in the history of grass racing in this country. Second to the Turf Handicap In Interest nnd importance was the handicap for two-year-olds at six furlongs over the regular course. A big. field started in this, race and it was decided at the start. Fenarrls, running for the first time In the colors of his new owner, M. L. Schwartz, winning all the way from Joe Miller, the hottest tip of the season. Mr. Hitchcocks colt, trained by W. H. Snyder, had worked a phenomenal trial, said to have been six furlongs in 1:11, and was the medium of tremendous wagering throughout the betting. Joe Miller met with much Ill-luck. Cottontown, the celebrated westerner, rehabilitated himself in the mile condition race, not so much by the horses he beat as the manner In which he won and the difficulties he had to overcome to do it. The winner In the opening race for two-year-olds at five and a half furlongs turned up In Tommy Crittins Eudora, with the two public choices, Beggar Maid and Anna May, ridden respectively by Miller and Radtke, running unplaced. Jack McGinnis won a fortune on Ostrichs lucky victory over the badly handled Peter Sterling in the mile and three-sixteenths handicap. E. R. Thomas refused to accept the short odds laid r-y the ring against his Rapallo gelding Quadrille in the six furlong selling race over the Futurity Course. Quadrille won, all right, but tried to bolt the course while doing it.
