JESSE MATHEWS SUCCUMBS TO CONSUMPTION. Jesse Mathews, the jockey, known to practically every race-goer in Chicago and the west died of consumption at his home near Hagerstown, Ind. Mathews was 33 years of age. He was one of the most famous jockeys in the country some years ago. He had important mounts at all of the principal tracks. Three years ago a severe cold, followed by con-jested lungs, forced Mathews to retire temporarily from the track, but he soon appeared to regain his former strength and Inter re-entered upon the active practice of his profession. But his physical system had been impaired beyond recuperation, and consumption finally took the place of less important ailments. He leaves a widow, father, mother and five sisters.
