BOOKMAKER ALVEY DOES SOME SHOOTING. Uses His Gun When Sam Stephens Kicks Him in the Chin Nobody Is Hurt. Louisville, Ky., October S. Ed Alvey now has a reputation as a "gun man." lie took a shot at Sam Stephens, a fellow bookmaker, while the horses were at the post for the sixth race at Churchill Downs this afternoon. The ball grazed Stephens abdomen und buried itself in the buckle on the trousers of his cashier. Stephens felt the sting of the bullet as It lew along his Shirt front and shouted loudly that he had been shot and was going to die. It took quite a bit of conversation to persuade him that he hud not been touched. Meanwhile the betting fin; liad been cleared, the excited throng rushing out upon the lawn. Alvey was taken in custody, but gave bonds for his appearance iu court tomorrow. The shooting was the result of a tale bearing. . Stephens, had made a wager with Alvey of 00 on lncle Henry. A few minutes later he sent over the request that he be permitted to take the bet off. Alvey refused to permit him to do so. Stephens- was disgruntled at this and remarked: "If 1 had time, Id go over there and pull his nose." Tliis was heard by a busybody, who hustled over to Alvcys book with the statement. When the betting on the race had closed Alvey sauntered over toStcpheus stand and said to liiin: "I understand you are going to pull my nose." For answer Stephens kicked him In the chin. Alvey whipped out a revolver and fired. It is lucky for Stephens lhat he proved a bad shot. Botli men have been cited to appear before the track officials. If the rule is applied they will be barred from the premises for the remainder of the meeting.
