BIG CROWD ENJOYS SPORT AT THE DOWNS. Favorites Win Most of the Races Steeplechase Results in a Good Contest. Louisville, Ky., October 8. Fine weather and a good card brought a big crowd to Churchill Downs this afternoon. Favorites were winners in most of the races. The steeplechase, over the short .course, was the spectacular feature of the racing. "It was a good contest throughout between the leaders and resulted in a tight finish, Cieolin getting the verdict by a nose over St. Volma, the favorite.- Gus Lanka was the; onl one iu the field that came to grief. He fell while in a contending position going over the eighth jump. . Pretensions seven furlongs in 1:27, was a smart performance. After going three-quarters in 1:13, he had to travel against a hard wind through the stretch, else he would have established a track record for the distance. Jockey D. Austin, who had his arm broken at Saratoga, returned to the saddle today. Wayne Jopliu arrived from New York. A. Koer-ner, who is under contract to him, arrived at th? same time. After this meeting Koerner will go to California. J. F. Newman and Sons horses will be shipped in a few days to Dallas, Texas. Jockey Preston will accompany the outfit, Sigmund broke dawn badly in his last start and will be permanently retired. The horses comprising the string of J. B. Dunne have arrived from Hamilton. Steeplechase jockey Pemberton has arrived from New "York.
