It would not have had so inueh this year, had, not the closing of the tracks in Missouri and, Illinois impelled it. The support which came to Churchill Downs in the spring was unusual, the nominal attendance beiug more than doubled by people from the north. The attendance at Douglas Park and Churchill Downs in the summer and autumn was seven-tenths foreign to the citys permanent population. The tracks have not made "big money." The weather conditions were propitious today and the track, under constant attention during the night, had dried out well. The program was a good -one and the attendance was In keeping with the offerings. Pretension established his rank as best in the handicap division for ail ages by scoring an impressive victory in the mile race that featured the. card. Ho was extensively supported, led his opponents throughout nnd won- by a good margin from Hannibal Bey, his recent conquerer. Wexfords performance was a. poor one. He can da .much better. Jockey Nicols return to the saddle was signalized by victories on Solly M., Harding and Auditor. The jockey rode with his head bandaged to protect the bruise caused by his falling in a batti house. Funiculalre and Zipango were the Only beaten favorites, the other four races being captured by first choices. J. Claire of Chicago is now the owner of Harding. He got him on: a bid of ,200 after his victory thia afternoon. II. C. Riddle, however, retained Auditor, for Bob Tucker, after J. B. Duuu had bid him up to ,000, an advance of 00. Jockey Koerner was fined 50 by- the starter for disobedience at the post in the first race. J. U. Strode J. Fleming and H. McCarren, Jr. will ship their entire strings direct to New- Orleaua during the week. A special train carrying more than three hundred passengers left tonight for Latonia. Present indications are that nearly all the layers that have been doing "business In the ring here will continue at Latonia.
