NO TRIAL AGAINST TIME, TWELVE HOURS OF HEAVY EAIN KEEPS ROSEBEN IN THE STABLE. Last Bay at - Bolmont Park, However, Furnishes Great Sport Hylas -Again Wins Champion Steeplechase Sensational Finishes. I f New York, October 20. Roseben remained in; hie stall this afternoon. Twelve hours of heavy rain so drenched the Belmont Park track that a record breaking attempt such as had been planned - for .the ehauiplon sprinter was out of the question. The "Westchester Racing Association keeps its ,000 and its gold cup and Salvators 1:35$ is quite sure to stand for another year at least. Few of the numerous people who flocked to the-eourse ou this closing day of the meeting escaped a wetting, but they didnt care. The sport they had was more tlan ample recompense for any bodily discomfort. The racing was of the most brilliant description. The running of the three big stakes the Champion Steeplechase, the Belmont Park Weight for Age and the rich White Plains Handicap, for two-year-olds over the six furlong straightaway all produced among the closest and most hard fought contests ever seen on a racecourse. The finishes between Hylas and Coligny and between Running Water and Nealon will go down into turf history as memorably thrilling and sensational struggles between thoroughbreds. The steeplechase course was soggy and unsafe. To the treacherous footing was ascribed the unskillful fencing of the English steeplechaser John 51. P. Tut; condition of- the course was likewise responsible for the slow time. In winning the Champion" Steeplechase last October, Hylas raiisJu 0:57. T,cf-day his time was one minute and twenty-six seconds slower. The victory of Hylas was received with popular acclaim. I t was all the more pronounced because he beat Coligny. the generally execrated representative from the Widener establishment. Barney Schreibers Nealon made all the running in the race over the regulation cup route and only succumbed in the last stride to the perfectly ridden favorite Running Water. John Sanfords Vails, which Avon the first race, was the medium of a tremendous plunge. A dozen agents acting for some persons whose identity was not discovered appeared in different quarters of the ribg when the betting opened and plastered the layers with ,000 bets until the price was literally wiped oft the boards. Davy Johnson this afternoon sent word to the Jamaica track officials that he is prepared to match his horse against Lady Amelia at three-quarters of a mile, weight for age . conditions to rule.
