WOODFORD CLAY GOES HOME. New York, October 23. Woodford Clay has folded his tent and gone back to Kentucky considerably richer than he was when he came east last sprhig. This has been an exceptionally good scasou for the young man from Bourbon county, although his neighbor and relative, Thos. C. McDowell, of Lexington, did not do so well as lie might have done. Mr. Clay developed Running Water, Content and Kentucky Beau and sold Running Water and Content at Saratoga for 5,000. Kentucky Beau, which capped his career at Belmont Park by winning the historic Champagne Stakes, has earned close to 0,000. "It will be well to keep an eye on Kentucky Beau next spring. Discriminating students of public form do not give him a place beside Salvi-dere, Electioneer, Peter Pan, Water Pearl and le Mund, but It rarely happens that the winner of the Champagne Stakes fails to distinguish himself as a three-year-old. Ben Brush won the Champagne of 1893 and S became the leading western Derby-winning three-year-old of 1890. The Friar won the Champagne of 1S90 and he was the best-eastern three-year-old the following year. Plaudit was a Champagne winner, and so was Stalwart. ki 1S9S Fiiigrane was beaten a head by a youngster to which lie conceded a ton of weight, and the following spring he won the Metropolitan Handicap. Mr. Clay is very much pleased with Kentucky Beau. Outcome went back to Kentucky and she may be bred to Orlando. Single Shot was left here to race at Jamaica and Aqueduct.
