ORNAMENT EIGHTH IN THE LIST. In the list i.r successful sires in America in 1900 Ornament stands eighth, it being his fourth year as one of the twenty leading stallions. Ornament is the property of Messrs. Headley and Norton and he stands ai Mr. lieadleys Beaumont Stud near Lex-bagtoa, K.v.. where he was bred and foaled. Ornament is now thirteen years old. That race was run the last Friday in April, and the following Tuesday saw him victorious in the Melbourne Stakes and the following Saturday he won the Kentucky Fntority. He was shipped to Oakley Park and entered for a purse race. His next start was in the Kindergarten Stakes at St. Louis and . there he met liis lirst defeat. He was all but left at the post. He finished third at the same track in the Champion Stakes and was then taken east. He ended his two-year-old ear by running unplaced in the Great Eastern Handicap. Ornament went into winter quarters at Memphis and began his three year old career — a most brilliant one — by winning ■ parse race at Montgomery Park. He was then taken to Louisville to get his final ■work for the Kentucky Derby, in which he was i i e. en i neck by Typhoon II. Following this he licked Dr. CSatletl Car the Clark Stakes; took the Latonia Derby from F. F. V.; gave Boanerges weight and a beating for the Hlmyar Stakes; avenged his defeat iii the Kentucky Derby by running Typhoon II. off ids legs in the St. Louis Derby; licked Tillo for the Oakley Derby; was left at the post the next lime out and following this Flelsch-maii beat him for the Buckeye Slakes. Mr. Patterson then bought Mr. Headleys interest in the col: and took him to Saratoga, but he was not raced there-. Patterson concluded that the Detroit Derby would lie a Cinch for him, so he shipped back to the west and -ot it. Six days later he was at Sheepshead Bay where he showed his heels to Cleophus, Voter and Hasting! la the Anton Handicap. Next he xvon the Twin City Handicap, but failed in the effort to give Hen Holladay twenty-three pounds, Batch Skater twenty three pounds, and Ben Eder twenty eight pounds and a beating for the Autumn Cup at two miles. He finished fourth in a sensational race. His next out was in a eondition race in Which he finished seeond to Hastings. He won the Brookwood Stakes from Sunny Slope and then Ben Brash Ix-at him for the Second Special at waignt for age. This ended his three-year-old year. As a four-year-old Ornament had the post of honor in all the big handicaps. For the Montgomery Handicap he was beaten kg Salvable, to which he was giving ■ year and nineteen pounds, but he won the t ounlry Club Handicap. Shortly af tjer this Messrs. He won the Brooklyn Handicap with 127 pounds up and Tod Sloan riding. Ben 4 Holladay, Sly Fox, Tillo, Don de Oro, Semper Ego, , Osaka and On Deck were behind him. For the Suburban there was a delay of fifty-two minutes at t the post. The field numbered fourteen and Ornament was conceding so much weight that the jostling and the worrying wore him out. He finished 1 unpla.-ed. Tillo winning. Seni| er Ego second and Ogden i third. He finished third for the Long Island Hajidieap. whieh was won by Ogden. to whieli he was conceding r twelve pounds. He ended his turf career by winning " the Brighton Handicap, giving Tillo two pounds. He entered the stud at Beaumont farm in the spring of ls.i»W and his first erop of foals, an even dozen, came In 1900 to race in 1902.
