GRANDE DAME A GOOD ONE. GEO. HENDRIE UNCOVERS A SPEEDY YOUNGSTER AT LOUISVILLE. Magic Wins the Steeplechase — Zal Earns His First Brackets as a Three-Year-Old — Halket Defeats Honest. Louisville. Ky., May 13.— Ideal racing weather and a good card combined to attract a large attendance to Churchill Downs this afternoon. Due ■ bielly to the better conditions of the track, it being fast for the first time since the beginning of the meeting, there was much improvement in the sport. The steeplechase over the short course wai the feature from a spectacular viowiKiint and it resulted in a hollow victory for Magic, which showed improved form and ran up to the high expectations of his connections. In his last start, which was his maiden effort over the obstacles, he was unsteady and blundered several times. Today he went about his business like an old timer, winning is his rider pleas,-.! after showing the way for the entire course. Only five of the eight starters went he course. New Amsterdam and Buxom, In an effort to save ground after going over the sixth obstacle, missed going around the flag, which put them out of the course. Peter Becker made a had I Hiding at the second jump and unseated his rider, who escaped injury. Zal took the six furlongs sprint. He was the betting choice and never gave his backers a moment of uneasiness. Mike Sutton proved the surprise by running to his best form and taking second place without great effort. In the closing race, P. King and his associates, attempted a betting coup on Scalploek. which had been beaten off in his previous race in going supposedly to be to his liking. He was beaten by inches. Louise Macfarlan managing to get up in aba last: stride to nose him .Hit. Probably the liest youngster of the year was uncovered iu the opening race at a half mile, when ieoige Ilendrie sent Grande Dame to the post. She • lashed into a long lead at once and won cantering, in impressive style, in the fast time of 48J. Had she been urged to do her best she would have smashed all former records over this course to smithereens and established one that would have been lasting for a long time. Banagher. which was accorded heavy support, ran a creditable race, but at no time had he a chance to get anywhere near the winner. There was a mixup at the start which caused I ora Neff, ridden by T. Taylor, to all. Taylor escaped unhurt and rode Zal to victory in I lie fifth race. Halket. at a fancy price, proved the afternoons surprise by belting out Honest as his rider pleased. Alencons victory in the second was due to Nicols uood riding. Boserrlan was best, hut Henntssy raced him into exhaustion. Jockeys Trueman and D. Riley were each fined 5 by the starter, the former fo using bad language and Riley for disobedience at the post. Trainer Phillips left for Toronto this morning with twelve horses owned by Fred Cook. Pete Coyne, who is handling the string of George .1. Long, left tonight for Sheepshead Bay with Sir Huon. Arcite and six two-year olds. Arcite will be a starter iu the Brooklyn Handicap and Sir Huon will hi- given an opportunity in the Suburban. The fillies Victoria B. and Altuda. both Kentucky Oaks candidates, were hit here witli a view to starting them iu that race if their form warrants. Jockey A. Brown, who showed good riding skill at Oakland this winter, arrived today to begin his engagement with the stable of Barney Schreiber. A very taking card is ottered for tomorrow afternoon and with Bach excelled racers as Cheswardine. Mcrritield. Headline: La Son store, Solly M., Alsono: Ancient. Toplofty. Hester Zorra; Colloquy.
