GETS COLD CONSOLATION. Albany. N. Y.. May XL— Sheriff Flaherty of Kings County, called on Governor Hughes today to receive a little moral encomageiuont in a proposed crusade against lictting at the race tracks: also it was said to throw the responsibility of any action he might take on the governor. In Ibis lie is reported to have signally failed. While the governor refused to talk about the interview, friends of the sheriff were not so reticent. The governor is sai.l to have told the sheriff that he assumed the sheriff was fully informed as to the law; that the governors responsibility was to see to it that the sheriffs of the various counties fulfilled their duties, not to tell them what these duties were. Furthermore, that if the shei ill was maty on his law in- could always consult with the governors legal adviser. So far as giving persona] advice, the governor is said to have added that lliat was out of his duty. but if the sheriff cared to present any special matter in writing, the governor would I"- pleased to eon-Bidet it. The sheriff is stated to have agreed with the governors position and said he would present certain formal questions in writing on liis return io Brooklyn. Flahertys activity seems to be purely personal. There is no backing to the move so far as can be teamed. There is a general belief here in New York that it is a bid for self glorification.
