NEAV EECOKD ON THE GRASS. DEACON LIGHT WINS TURF HANDICAP AFTER A THRILLING FINISH. cats Miss Crawford By a Head Nealon Is Unplaced Electioneer Scores His First Victory as a Three-Year-Old. New York, September C. Electioneer, Ibe Futurity winner of 1900, scored bis first victory as a three-year-old when be made bis fifth start of this season In the race at one mile exclusively for horses of bis ape at Slieepshead Kay this afternoon. lie ran the mile in 1 :.2g, and won by a bead from Kentucky Keau. He was carrying a lot of money at odds-on, and bis backers were lucky to cash. At tile half-mile ground Electioneer assumed the lead, killed off Prejuicio, which bad helped to force the pace, and came into the stretcb with a margin of two lengths before the now rapidly closing Kentucky Keau. This horse bad been choked and restrained in the early stages by Miller in his eOort to place bim, and just before the finish ho swerved to the outside. This gave the race to the tiring Klectioneer. Anipedo, which finished third, six lengths back of Kentucky Keau, was away flatfootud, closed a big gap and ran a smashing race. The Tnrf Handicap for throe-year-olds and upward at one and three-sixteenths miles on the grass, was the feature of the card. It furnished a thrilling contest and was won by Keacon Light in 1:59, a new record for the course. Nealon was tlie favorite at evens and was backed for a fortune. He moved up on the inside at the beginning of the last five-eighths, and, when entering llie stretcli appeared a menacing contender, but tired and dropped back to fifth position at the finish. Miss Crawford, Acrobat and Oxford made the running at a tremendously fast pace for the first mile and a sixteenth. Keacon Light, close up and beld In reserve by Miller, came with a sensational closing sprint and earned the victory by a head over the inconsistent Darden representative. Tlie demonstration which followed the lihisli was proof conclusive that a victory by Miss Crawford would have been unpopular. Following is the tabled history of the Turf Handicap: Year. Winner. A. In hacking Onatassa for the opening race, tlie handicap for two-year-olds at three-quarters of a mile, tlie talent got their checks down wrong. Tlie San ford colt was never dangerous and finished unplaced. Ken Fleet, the second choice, was best mid was beaten only a head by Kialto. .Toyners colt was lucky in getting away to a Hying start and just did last long enough to stall olt tlie belated challenge of Ken Fleet, which was oil poorly and messed about consideral ly in tlie early stages. For tlie first six furlongs of the second race, which was for three-year-old fillies at one inile, ltoyal Lady, the favorite, and Clare Kussell, tlie heavily backed second choice, raced head and bead, but the concession of eight pounds to her competitor told on Clare Kussell, and ltoyal Lady came home practically alone. Clare Kussell bad no contention for second place and was twelve lengths in front of Killiecrankie at tlie end. Tlie start was a bad one. Kelle of Iroquois was left at tlie post and Eudora was almost left. For tlie second time within a week Cairngorm failed bis backers when be finished third to Kight Koyal, and Missouri Lad in the handicap at one mile and a quarter, which came third on the card. Tlie victory or the rejuvenated cripple, Kight Koyal. was particularly impressive. It was thought that tlie track was too hard for the Lazarus horse, hence the receding price. The owner is said to bavc won 0,000. Andy Klakeley sent Arasee to the post very lit in tlie closing race, and the result with .Miller up was hardly ever in doubt. The stable made a clen-up over tlie Klues geldings victory. Ideal weather conditions attracted the biggest attendance of the week, except Labor Day. The traek is rapidly drying out, and it is expected to be in good condition for the attractive feature on tomorrows card. Howard Oots has gone to Lexington, Ky., with lils horses and the three that be was training for A. J. Gorey. including Old Honesty, bave been turned over to L. V. Kellew. Alex Shields is now at his home in Rrooklyn, and there is no improvement in bis condition, lie is suffering from a nervous breakdown, and is unable to retain proper nourishment. Captain It. .T. Hancock of tlie Ellcrslle Stud In Virginia, whose yearlings were sold at Sheepshoad Buy today. Is now convalescent after quite a serious illness.
