... 1 BRIGHTON CUP FIELD AND FORM. 1 1 Candidates for, and History of, Saturdays i Big Two-Mile Race. 1 The first and second races for the Brighton Cup fell to three-year-olds. Then, for six years in , succession, it was carried off by four-year-olds, hut in the last- tw- years - three-year-olds lnive"agaln f triumphed and it seems that the rich prize is destined to he taken by a horse of that age this year. The high-class three-year-olds. Salvidere, Ballot, Electioneer, Montgomery and Frank Gill are in the Cup and they all appear to hold the older horses safe, trying as the long distance of two miles and a quarter is. The Cup was first rim in 1S97 with three starters. Ben Brush was the favorite at 2 to 5, but when it came to tlie finish The Friar was first by a head in a hot struggle with the good filly Sunny Slope and lien Brush was six lengths away. That year the race was of the guaranteed value of ,000. It was increased to ,500 the next year and was won by the magnificent Hamburg, with Ogden second -and Howard Mann third1. Only the three started and Hamburg was at such prohibitive odds as 1 to .",0 and won by a sixteenth of a mile. In 1S99 but three started again and the western horse Dangle proved the victor. Don do Oro was an even-money favorite, but Dangle defeated him easily by four lengths, witli Latson a distant third. That year the race was changed from a guaranteed value affair to one with ,000 added. The best field all around that ever contested the Cup was in 1900 when tlie famous horses Ethelliert, Imp, Sidney Lucas and Herbert went to the post. As was to be expected, an extraordinary race resulted and after Imp had set a tremendous pace and ran the first two miles in 3:2:;, Ethelbert challenged in the stretch and, in an exciting struggle, won by a half length. Tlie American Derby winner, Sidney Lucas, was a game third, but eight lengths away. The race was run in 3:491 and that is tlie record for two miles and a quarter to this day. In 1901 but two horses went to the post, Prince of Melbourne and Rochester. The latter had no chance and simply started to win the ,000 allotted to the second horse. Prince of Melbourne won by ten lengths. In 1902 the starters were Gold Heels, Sun Shower and Surmise. Gold Heels was at 1 to 15 and won in fast time without having leen extended, but burst a tendon sheath in the race and was ruined as a race horse. The Cup was contested by four starters in 1003, Her-inis. Major. Daingerliehl, Igniter and Allan and tliey finished in that order. Major Difingeriiehl was the favorite at 0 to 5, Hermis was "at S to 5, Igniter, 1 to 1 and Allan, 00 to 1. Hermis won by eight lengths in 3:533, the second fastest time of the race. The next year the starters were Africander, McChesney and Major Daingerfieid". The western champion, McChesney, was the favorite at 15 to 10, but in a long and sternly contested stretch drive Africander prevailed by three-quarters of a length. Major Daingerliehl was beaten off and the race was run in 3:55. Dy this time tlie endowment of the race had been raised to its present valife of 0,-,X0 and a ,000 gold cup added. In 1905, for the second time in its history, but two horses started, Cairngorm and Cauglinawaga. Cairngorm had beaten the latter in tlie Cup Preliminary, but the betting men disregarded the lesson of that race and Cauglinawaga was a 9 to 20 favorite. Cairngorm won easily by six lengths. Last year Holscher, Flip. Flap, Proper and The Clown were the starters. Proper had defeated Flip Flap in the Cup Preliminary, so lie was made 1 3 to 5 favorite with Flip Flap second choice at S to 5. Holscher was at 30 to 1. He- did not start in tlie Cup Preliminary and had secretly beep given a long and careful preparation for the Gup. niat it was effective was shown when, in a severe finish, lie won by a half length from Flip Flap in 3:59i. Proper and The Clown were beaten off. Holscher is a Cup eligible again. It will be noted that four is .the greatest number of horses sent to the post for the Brighton Cup In v any year of its history. No more may go this year, hut unless Frank Gill is really out of form, it seems the five three-year-olds named should go to the post. Of the older horses eligible Dunning Water, Cottontown, Go Detween, Kercheval, Holscher, Good Luck and Ironsides are best and one or more may be started. Taking it that the field will come from the horses named, their best performances this year nearest to the distance of the Cup may prove instructive. They are: Horse. Age. Track. Wt. DS. Time.
