TRAINER BRANDT AND HIS M UDDERS, j Herman Brandt. Barney Sehn;ibers eastern trainer, ! declares that Jack Atkin cannot run in the mud. j 1 "I have tried him in it eight times and he has I failed seven times. He goes in It no more." says Brandt. Brandt believes Preen can beat Chief Hayes on a fast track, but he did not think him capable of taking the Sain four-year-olds measure in muddy going. Chief Hayes improves twenty pounds when he strikes a heavy track. Brandt attributes Preens last victory to good luck. Preen got a good ride, while Chief Hayes was unskilfully handled by little Sumter. There was nothing Jack Atkin could not do to Chief Hayes when the two horses were in Brandts stable, yet Chief Hayes ran from behind Jack Atkin in muddy going last Monday ami beat him for place Monday in a race, won by Don Enrique.
