APPROPRIATE FOR BALLOT. WINS ELECTION DAY HANDICAP IN A SPLENDID RACE. Bushwick Steeplechase Falls to Thistledale Live Wire Wins Babylon Handicap from King Sol. New York, November 5. Ballot Tory appropriately won the Election Day Handicap at Aqueduct this afternoon. It. was doubly appropriate for the reason that his sire, Voter, also won an election day rare during his career on the turf. Ballot was not sent out in the overnight list, but was added before the nice. Bedouin was silso added. It was a smashing good race all the way and the best horse won. Notler, who rode Ballot, i;ted him two or three lengths behind the leaders to the stretch and, when he called on him there, he came away anil, out gaming Brookdale Nymph, had half a length to spare at the finish. McCarter was third, after having set the early pace. His performance was a thoroughly good one and it was only in the last furlong that lie faltered. Broot;-dale Nymph was none too fortunate at the start, but she was fotiiuate in finding her way through lit st to the rail and was a close second to McCarter at the end of the lirst sixteenth. Dugan was content lo keep her within striking distance of McCarter until well into the stretch, where she ra-ed by him, but did not have enough left to Withstand the final challenge of Ballot. Bedouin, which finished fourth, ran a remarkably good race and was the only one to olfer serious contention. The condensed history of the Election Day Handicap is given below: Year. Winner. A. Wr. It was a well ph ased crowd, for Live Wire, the only winner not a choice, was well supported. It was the Babylon Handicap, a six furlongs dash for two-year-olds, that went to Live Wire. Adriana was the one chosen by the favorite backers and she wns being taken at evens at post lime. She had no mishaps, but. could never reach the front and was tiring badly at the end and beaten off. Itialto was the pacemaker with Live "Wire a close second. In the final furlong Live Wire came away to win as his rider pleased by three lengths. Colts Thistledale. lb was always the choice and. leading rrom end to end, had plenty left at the linish. He went at his fences swerving and his jumping was far from impressive, but he was easily better than Jimmy Lane and Bat. Bunnell, the only other starter, fell at the second fence. Bat is a green juniper and bis performance was one that attracted general attention. He fell at the last fence after racing second throughout, but was remounted and finished for third money. The tabled history of the Bushwick Steeplechase is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockev. Val. Time. 1900 Expansionist. 5 154 W.O. Sally Ireston. after being backed from 0 down to :: to 1 took the fifth. This race was marred by an accident. In the running Sailor Girl jumped on .olden West and cut her down so badlv that D Is probable she will haire to bo destroyed. At the same time Sailor drl fell. Amidon. who had the mount on Sailor Oirl, was bruised considerably, while .Musgrave, who rode Golden West, escaped nnhiirl. At the end of the program Countermand scored from eleven other maidens that raced the seven furlongs route. Herbert, who rode Loring, which fell on the far Mini lit the running of the lirst race, had a rib broken and was badly bruised. On the report of tin1 patrol judge that Brussel. who rode Vaddo, was responsible for the accident to Loring, he was .suspended for four days for rough riding! After Not tors ride on Ballot for the Election Day Handicap, it was reported from sources which may l.e authoritative, that he will he the principal rider for James K. Keene next year. Notter has ridden a number of races for Mr. Keene this season and was especially complimented by the vice-chairman or the Jockey Club after the winning of the Brighton Handicap with Deter Dan. There was nothing new in the Boles case today. Mr. Bides was not at the track himself and his books were not in operation. The belief that he was tipped off to piit and that a big investigation is under way, will not down, though there is nothing from otliclal sources on which the rumor may be based. Jockey Shaw, who rode in Germany " this season, returned to America this morning and was at Aqueduct during the afternoon. He was very well pleased with his season abroad, where he rode lifty-three winners and was at the head of the list. His victories included the principal stake events of the German turf, and AVeinberg Bros., for whom he rode, are the biggest winners on the German turf by a wide margin. Shaws only objection to racing in Germany was that there was not enough of it. as they race only two and three days a week. He will not go back next year,, and it is generally understood that he will ride for Frank Farrell.
