WATERBURY DISAPPOINTS BACKERS. Runs Poorly In Opening Race Glenechp Spoils Coup Three Favorites Win. Los Angeles, Cal., December 19. An overcast sky and threatening rain were instrumental today in keeping many Los Angeles racing enthusiasts from visiting Santa Anita Park, hut despite these drawbacks the attendance was large. A harrowed and sprinkled track made the course a little slow, but even at that comparatively good time was made. The fields were small but the quality of the horses entered was much better than those that raced yesterday. The colors of R. F. Carman failed to finish in front today, Waterbury being the greatest disappointment. He was held at almost prohibitive odds but ran a surprisingly dull race for him and finished an indifferent third. Jane Swift, although if was her first start here, was well backed, and while she failed to win ran a promising race and should make good the next time out. The New York contingent fancied Ed Ball, on the strength of his recent " Frisco" showing, and went to him almost to a man, but he had to succumb to Phil Chinns Glcnc6ho,. which ran a splendid race, holding Ed Ball safe throughout the final sixteenth. The "betting is steadily improving and the seventeen bookmakers found ample business to keep them busy.
