NOTES OF THE TURF. The number of Irish winners on the flat in England in 1907 was 218, the number of races won, 3S5, and the amount of stakes won .SiO. The Santa Auita track is said to have a decline of over three feet from the head of the stretch to the finishing point which may partly account for Its speed. Jockey Henry Spencer, who rode in France this year for Nash Turner, who is the trainer of a public stable, has signed a contract to ride in Germany next year. M. C. Lewis, one of the most prominent members of the Metropolitan Turf Association, was married recently to Miss Annie Shire at the Manhattan Hotel in New York, and the couple are now in the south- on a wedding trip. Bookmaker Martin is said to be the only one of the thirty-odd layers operating at Oakland who has laid up any money since the meeting opened, and he is only credited with being about ,000 ahead in conducting his operations along conservative lines. It is reported that capitalists are buying lumber and other material to build a race track on the Ohio side of the Ohio river opposite Huntington, West Virginia. Rush Willamson, of Catlettsburg, Ky., is credited with being the prime mover in the new enterprise. Close associates of James Butler say that he will not sell any part of the Yonkers track to members of the Jockey Club or any one else. It is also rumored that Mr. Butler is planning to race a formidable stable of his own next season, which is to be handled, byone of the best trainers he can find.
