; VICTORY OF LEE ROSE CAUSES UPROAR. Crowd Surrounds Judges Stand in Angry Demonstration, Claiming Valjean Won. Los Angeles. Cal.. February 26. — J. J. Walsh was an important factor in Santa Anita Iark racing today. Early iu the day he bought Lee Rose from the Oakland Stable, paying ,000 for him with the proviso that the sale would not go unless the gelding won. He then l et 0. KX on his new acquisition, taking 2 to ." for his money. TIih race developed into one of the most exciting of the meeting. Lee Rose winning in a desperate drive by the shortest of margins. Walsh more than half won out his new purchase and was congratulated for his gamencss. After the finish an angry crowd surrounded the judges stand and shouted for Valjean. which had finished fast. Several of the spectator- showed considerable rowdyism and were iuiui -diately ejected from the grounds by Seymour Beutler, the Pinkertou representative, who has charge of the policing here. i S. C. Hildreth is negotiating for the purchase of sixty acres of land near Santa Anita Park, which, if he closes the deal, he will convert Into a training establishment for the horses in his stable not in active training. It is also his Intention to leave all the horses here which he will not take east this spring. Another turfman who believes that the San Gabriel valley is a good location for a small ranch is W. I. Millard, and he today closed a deal for a ten-acre tract near the track. Charles G. Gates has returned to Port Arthur, Texas, where he will meet his father. It is their intention to return here in a short time for a brief visit. I. H. Miller has arrived at the track from Oakland with five horses. Jockey T. Rice accompanied Miller and will remain here for the rest of the season. E. J. Baldwin has sufficiently recovered to he about, but has not as yet ventured to make a visit to the track. Kd Alvey and his friends profited handsomely by the victory of Dr. Simrall in the first race. They backed the horse down to 3 to 1 and then saw him returned the wiuner by four lengths over Lancashire Lad and Max Nal. Henry of Shennamere, the public choice, finished a i oor fourth. The unbeaten Lee Rest-, which started today In the colors of J. J. Walsh, the Canadian turfman, met with considerable interference after leaving the post slowly, but managed to get up to win by a narrow margin in the last stride of a resolute finish. One of the surprises of the afternoon was the running of Esther B.. which finished second in the third race at the long price of 100 to 1 against her chances. She was far in the rear to the stretch where, from an outside position, she finished with a rush and took second place by a head from Sun Mark. Another surprise was the victory of Wexford over Mark Antony II. and Tony Faust in the handicap, which featured the card. The finish between the first three horses was close and all three were driving to the limit as they passed the judges stand. The further entries of Silverskin and Crepps Beckham will be refused for inconsistent running and jockey R. Brooks will not lie allowed to ride here again on account of Incompetence. The draw-in consisted of twenty-three books today.
